Now that we know where the Great River is, I say it's every animal for himself. Whoever gets there first drinks as much as he wants. The last one to get there won't get a drop!
―Zebra[src]

Zebra is a male zebra.

During a severe drought, Mohatu attempted to lead the Pride Landers to the Great River. However, Zebra inspired a rebellion against Mohatu and incited his fellow animals into racing one another to the water source. Along the way, Zebra kicked Cheetah in the chest and left him to get trampled by the other Pride Landers. Upon reaching the Great River, Zebra drank from its waters, only to get caught in a pit of quicksand. With some help from Mohatu's friend, Crocodile, Zebra was able to escape, after which he apologized to Cheetah for his poor behavior.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Zebra lived in the Pride Lands.[1]

Drought[]

Zebra rebellion

Zebra inspires a rebellion against Mohatu.

During a drought, Mohatu found a source of water that could save the Pride Lands. He told his subjects that they could not harm one another until the drought had passed, but Zebra pointed out that, since the first law had been broken by Mohatu's own kind, he wanted the protection of the wildebeests. However, Wildebeest did not want to go, as he did not trust the hippopotamuses near the river. A hippo spoke up and said that the only animal to be feared was the crocodile. Mohatu shouted at the animals to be silent, but they would not listen. They soon began to argue with one another, and Zebra declared that it was every animal for itself.

All the animals ran for the Great River in a massive stampede. Cheetah started to streak ahead of the others, but Zebra kicked him in the chest, and the animals ran over him in their mad rush to reach the Great River.

Crocodile saves Zebra

Crocodile saves Zebra from quicksand.

Zebra reached the river first but got himself stuck in quicksand. All the animals rushed forward to help him, but he was too firmly stuck. Just then, Mohatu arrived with Cheetah on his back and summoned Crocodile to help Zebra. Crocodile answered Mohatu's call and used his tail to pull Zebra to safety.

Once safe, Zebra apologized to Cheetah for having kicked him. The other animals proceeded to drink their share of the water. From then on, the animals of the Pride Lands returned to the Great River over and over again to drink, and Crocodile was always kind to them. Even after the drought ended, Mohatu continued to journey to the Great River to see his friends, Zebra, Crocodile, Hippo, and Wildebeest.[1]

Physical appearance[]

Zebra is long-legged and slender, with a black and white coat, a gray muzzle, and black eyes.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Initially, Zebra was arrogant and conceited, to the point that it nearly cost him his life. He believed that every animal should fend for itself and was willing to use aggression and violence to gain an advantage over others. However, after he nearly died in a pit of quicksand, he apologized for his previous behavior and became more selfless in nature.[1]
