There is usually a way of finding out the truth – even when someone is trying to hide it.

Who Stole Duiker's Eggs? is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

A hen from Duiker's farm lays a large clutch of eggs, which pleases Duiker. That day, he leaves to work on his farm, but when he returns to the hen, he finds that her eggs have been stolen. Duiker presses the other animals for information about the thief, but no one knows what has happened.

This goes on for several days, with Hen laying many eggs, but getting stolen from by evening. Eventually, Duiker goes to Elephant, the chief of animals, for help. Elephant orders a bonfire to be built and tells all the animals to come before it to test their innocence. He explains that each animal will jump over the fire, and if they fall in, they are guilty of stealing the hen's eggs.

Antelope is the first animal to be tested. He manages to jump cleanly to the other side, and the animals cheer for his innocence. Many other animals prove their innocence afterward, but when Leopard attempts to jump over the fire, he falls into the flames. The fire brands his flesh red and black, forever marking him a thief, before he can escape into the night.
