Every time I run into the Lion Guard, I'm the one getting run over. Someday, they'll regret it.
―Ushari[src]

Ushari was a male Egyptian cobra. He was a member of the Army of Scar.

After suffering countless unintentional abuses by the Lion Guard, Ushari and his ally, Janja, summoned and joined forces with the resurrected spirit of Scar. Under Scar's leadership, Ushari helped plan and execute missions against the Pride Landers, while Janja gathered allies among the Outlanders. During the final confrontation between the Army of Scar and the Pride Landers, Ushari scarred Kion and injected him with venom. Shortly afterward, Kion defeated Scar, and Ushari attacked Kion in vengeance. However, Bunga knocked Ushari into the volcano, where he was incinerated by the lava.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ushari lived in the Pride Lands.[1]

Kion and Bunga's game of Baobab Ball[]

While playing Baobab Ball, Kion and Bunga ran toward Ushari. Bunga accidentally tripped over Ushari, and the two ended up in a tangle, with Kion and Bunga's baobab fruit in Ushari's mouth. Bunga took the baobab fruit back from Ushari, then ran away, with Kion in hot pursuit. As Kion raced toward Bunga, Ushari ducked, and Kion leaped over his head.[1]

Blocking Bunga's path[]

Going somewhere, Bunga?
―Ushari[src]

While trying to lead the Lion Guard to Flat Ridge Rock, Bunga ran into Ushari, who threateningly asked him where he was going. Bunga consequently chose a different path.[2]

Hunting Pim[]

Say! That was my lunch!
―Ushari to Bunga on Pim[src]

After the Lion Guard rescued Pim from a thorn bush, Ushari snuck up behind him and ate him whole. Indignant, Bunga approached Ushari and forced Pim out of his mouth. Ushari protested that Pim had been his lunch, but Bunga simply rolled Ushari into a ball and tossed him into a tree. There, Ushari lay in a defeated heap and hissed Bunga's name in annoyance.[3]

Flood[]

After a severe flood hit the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard looked down Ushari's hole so they could ensure that he and the other cobras were not stuck in the mud. After Beshte pointed out that he was too big to climb down the hole, Kion looked to Fuli, who groaned and lamented Bunga's absence. Before she could climb down the hole to check on Ushari, Ono flew up and told the Lion Guard to follow him to Hakuna Matata Falls.[4]

Kupatana[]

Ushari attended the Kupatana celebration.[5]

Attack on Bunga[]

He landed on my head, Beshte.
―Ushari justifies his attack on Bunga[src]

When Bunga got heaved into a bush, he landed on Ushari's head. Out of pure reflex, Ushari bit him, and Ono worried that the bite was venomous. Beshte asked Ushari why he would do such a thing, and Ushari retorted that Bunga had landed on his head and that he was lucky to have only gotten bitten once.[6]

Fight with Bunga[]

I should bite you, Bunga, but the last time I did, I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for days.
―Ushari, after Bunga tackles him[src]

When Bunga mistook Ushari for a tree branch, he tackled the cobra to the ground. Ushari, in turn, wrapped Bunga tightly in coils and told him that he would like to bite him but that the last time he had, he had been unable to rid himself of the taste for days.[7]

Disturbed by Hafifu and Majinuni[]

Every time I get near the Lion Guard...
―Ushari[src]

When two gorillas named Hafifu and Majinuni entered the Pride Lands, they wreaked havoc on several of the Pride Landers. Hafifu mistook Ushari for a stick and heaved him at a baobab fruit. Ushari eventually fell to the ground, where he lamented how he always got into trouble when he was around the Lion Guard.[8]

Scar's resurrection[]

No wonder Kion always outsmarts the hyenas; he's getting advice from the wisest lion the Pride Lands has ever known!
―Ushari on Kion's relationship with Mufasa[src]

Ushari and Janja resolve to resurrect the spirit of Scar.

As the dry season intensified, the Lion Guard became busier than ever. Oftentimes, they would run over Ushari, who became increasingly annoyed by the abuse.

One day, Ushari watched as Kion spoke to Makini about his ability to communicate with the spirit of his grandfather, Mufasa. Fascinated, Ushari contemplated how he could use what he had learned against the Lion Guard.

Ushari tricks Makini into revealing whether there is a way to talk to the evil Lions of the Past.

Ushari journeyed to the Outlands, where he got attacked by Janja and his clan. Before the hyenas could eat him, Ushari asked Janja if he would like something meatier. Janja replied that he would but that the Lion Guard kept driving his clan out of the Pride Lands, to which Ushari revealed that that was because Kion was getting advice from Mufasa. He added that if the hyenas wanted to stop the Lion Guard, then they should find a way to talk to one of the Great Lions of the Past themselves. Janja retorted that no Great Lion would help hyenas, but Ushari reminded him that there was one Great Lion who had always helped hyenas: Scar. He added that if Kion could talk to Mufasa, then there must be a way for them to talk to Scar.

Back in the Pride Lands, Makini found her bakora staff. Ushari approached and convinced her to get Rafiki to reveal if there was a way to talk to Scar. Ushari then summoned his skink friends to spy on Makini and reveal what Rafiki told her about Scar. In the Lair of the Lion Guard, Rafiki explained that communication with a Great Lion depended on if the Great Lion was good or bad and that the Evil Lions of the Past, like Scar, appeared in fire if they were first unleashed by the Roar of the Elders and the bakora staff. After overhearing Rafiki's explanation, the skinks reported what they had learned to Ushari and Janja.

Ushari and Janja witness the return of Scar.

Back in the Outlands, Ushari and Janja decided to use what they had learned to summon Scar. They plotted to get Makini's bakora staff, since she was too inexperienced to be a threat, and to attack one of Kion's loved ones and bring them to the volcano, since Kion's Roars were at their most powerful when he was angry.

The hyenas kidnapped Kion's sister, Kiara, and took Makini's bakora staff. While the rest of the Lion Guard rescued Kiara, Janja tricked Kion into using the Roar out of anger, which caused the volcano to erupt. Janja proceeded to throw Makini's bakora staff into the volcano, and Scar was successfully summoned.[9]

Recruiting Kiburi[]

One battle doesn't lose a war, my reptile friend.
―Ushari to Kiburi[src]

Ushari convinces Kiburi to assassinate Simba.

When Makuu left with the Lion Guard to speak to Simba about new sleeping arrangements, Kiburi seized control of the float and took over the Pride Lands' water holes. From afar, Shupavu watched in fascination and resolved to speak to Ushari and Scar about the proceedings. Upon hearing Shupavu's report, Scar praised Ushari for his spies' work, then ordered the skinks to continue monitoring the situation.

Later, Kiburi called for a mashindano with Makuu. Shupavu reported the proceedings to Scar, who questioned Ushari as to whether the royal family would attend the event. Ushari confirmed that Simba would likely be present, and Scar schemed to use the mashindano as a distraction from Simba's assassination. Scar then ordered Ushari to convince Kiburi that he could become the ruler of the Pride Lands, and Ushari agreed to the plot.

Ushari leads the crocodiles to the volcano, where they meet Scar.

At sunset, the Pride Landers gathered at Lake Matope to watch the mashindano. Before the event, Ushari spoke privately with Kiburi, who agreed to send his lackeys to assassinate Simba. Just then, Kiburi was called to return to the mashindano, and he and Makuu began their fight. As the crocodiles brawled, Kiburi's lackeys attempted to sneak up on Simba. However, their plan got thwarted by the Lion Guard, and Kiburi and his followers were subsequently banished to the Outlands.

As Kiburi and his followers entered the Outlands, Kiburi cornered Ushari and accused him of having caused his downfall. Instead of rising to the bait, Ushari calmly promised Kiburi that one lost battle did not mean a lost war, and he led the crocodiles to the volcano to meet Scar. With the Outlanders looking on, Scar plotted to overtake the Pride Lands and become the king of Pride Rock once more.[10]

Ambush on Beshte[]

Just listen. Scar always has a plan! Big plans!
―Ushari[src]

Njano informs Ushari that Beshte is alone in the Outlands.

Njano entered the volcano and informed Ushari and his allies that Beshte was alone in the Outlands. Though Janja tried to dismiss the situation, Scar appeared and ordered his cronies to eliminate Beshte. When Cheezi and Chungu wondered how they might accomplish this, Scar declared that he had a plan.

Ultimately, Janja's clan failed in their attack, and Ushari arrived to tell them that Scar wished to speak with them.[11]

Assassination attempt on Jasiri[]

I'm sorry, did you say one hyena defeated all three of you?
―Ushari to Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu on Jasiri[src]

Ushari was sleeping in the volcano when he got awakened by Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu, who admitted that they had been defeated by Jasiri. Ushari taunted the trio for having lost to a single opponent, but Janja protested that Jasiri was not an ordinary hyena. Disturbed by Jasiri's presence in the Outlands, Scar ordered Janja's clan to eliminate her.[12]

Alliance with Kenge[]

Trust me. My friend is not a little lizard. He's very big...and very bad.
―Ushari on Kenge[src]
2017-12-02-05 54 06

Ushari boasts about his friend, Kenge.

Janja and his lackeys entered the volcano, where they reported to Ushari and Scar that the Lion Guard had prevented them from stealing some Tikiti melons in the Pride Lands. Scar deduced that destroying the melon supply could offset the Circle of Life, as it would dehydrate the elephants, and so he ordered the hyenas to return to the fruit patch and take the melons. Janja protested the idea as foolishness, since the Lion Guard was waiting for them there, but Ushari volunteered to connect them with a powerful friend of his who could help them. He proceeded to boast about his friend Kenge's great speed and deadly bite.[13]

Defeat in the volcano[]

Sumu's venom is reserved for a more royal target.
―Ushari[src]

Ushari and the rest of the Army of Scar cornered the Lion Guard in the volcano. However, Kion defeated them by using the Roar of the Elders to clear a path of escape.[14]

Skirmish with Kinyonga[]

Stop the intruder!
―Ushari on Kinyonga[src]

Janja journeyed to the volcano. Upon his arrival, Ushari informed him that he was late and commented that he would have sent the skinks to search for him if he had not showed up. The two started bickering until Scar ordered them to stop. Later, Kinyonga accidentally revealed herself to the Outlanders, and Ushari ordered the skinks to stop her.[15]

Battle for the Pride Lands and death[]

Stop! You can't destroy him!
―Ushari on Scar[src]
UshariDeath

Ushari falls to his death.

As the seasons went by, the Army of Scar lost several battles against the Lion Guard. One day, Nyata and Nyeusi reported to Ushari that Janja's loyalty was in question. Ushari expressed his doubts to Scar about the Army of Scar's plans and Janja's loyalty to their cause, but Scar assured him that he was always two steps ahead. Shortly afterward, Scar sent Janja to distract Kion and explained to Ushari that he was double-crossing Janja. He then shared the tale of how he had gotten his scar. At the conclusion of his story, Scar told Ushari that the time had come for Kion to get his own scar and that Ushari himself would inflict it.

During the final battle between the Outlanders and the Pride Landers, the Lion Guard entered the volcano, and Ushari bit Kion on the eye, giving him a scar and injecting him with venom. Scar began to mock Kion about his scar, while Bunga restrained Ushari. However, rather than caving to Scar's influence, Kion forgave Scar and summoned the Great Lions of the Past to judge him. The Great Lions of the Past proceeded to destroy Scar with rain, and Ushari attacked Kion in vengeance. However, Bunga intercepted the attack and sent them both plunging toward the lava. While Ono saved Bunga from the fall, Ushari fell to his death.[16]

Physical appearance[]

Ushari is a slender and long-bodied Egyptian cobra. He has burgundy scales, with a tan underbelly and purple stripes along his back. He has black eyes and a hood that he can expand at will.[1]

Personality and traits[]

And then, we reptiles will rule the Pride Lands! Uh, under your leadership, of course. Right, Scar?
―Ushari[src]
2019-08-15-22 23 15

Ushari was deceptive, sly, and bent on revenge against the Lion Guard.

Initially, Ushari was reclusive and fairly mild-mannered.[2] Occasionally, if the Lion Guard disturbed him, he would react with aggression and hostility, though he often justified his behavior as being a means of self-defense.[6] Over time, Ushari came to resent the Lion Guard for constantly running him over and causing him trouble, and even vowed to make them regret it someday. He became outright malicious and vengeful when he sought to resurrect the spirit of Scar, to the point that he was willing to trick Makini, steal her bakora staff, and kidnap Kiara in order to achieve his goals.[9]

Ushari was quite deceptive and slick, and would manipulate others for his own ends. He tricked Kiburi into making an attempt on Simba's life[10] and made promises to the skinks so they would act as his spies.[9] Additionally, he served Scar only as a means of someday seizing power for himself and his fellow reptiles.[9] Despite his more self-serving tendencies, Ushari was fiercely loyal to Scar and obeyed the spirit's every command. Upon Scar's destruction at Kion's paws, Ushari attacked Kion in revenge, only to fall to his death in the volcano.[16] Ushari especially disliked Bunga.[3]

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Ushari's name means "provocation, quarrelsomeness, aggravation, pugnacity" in Swahili.[18]
  • Ono refers to Ushari as an Egyptian cobra.[6] However, Ushari's markings are more akin to those of an Indian cobra, a species that is not native to Africa.[19]
