"To Be King" is a deleted song composed by Elton John for The Lion King. It is sung by Mufasa, Zazu, and various Pride Landers as Mufasa teaches Simba about the ways of being a monarch.
In the middle of the song, Mufasa calls the alarm, a mighty roar that warns his subjects that a giant flood is coming. The animals go to higher ground for safety. When the waters calm, the animals sing praises to the king. Simba is shocked to find out that being king does not just mean having fun. He wants to spend more time with his father and Zazu, but they have their royal duties, and Simba goes back home.[1]
Lyrics[]
Mufasa:
To be king is a huge obligation
It's not just a license for fun
And since you're the next generation
And even more, since you're my son
I owe you a dad's explanation
That a lifetime of duties begun
But don't get depressed
You get ranked with the best
I'll tell you how, one to one
To be king is a daunting position
Zazu:
But who gives a hoot when you're hot
Mufasa:
He must uphold both the law and tradition
Zazu:
But the perks make up for a lot!
Mufasa:
In short, he's a master tactician
Who must give every subject a shot
Zazu:
From termite to tusker
Mufasa:
From dawn until dusk-ah
Mufasa and Zazu:
A king gives it all that he's got!
Animals:
King, head honcho, master commander
Ruler of all you survey
Up in the mountains
Down in the flat lands
My, what a beautiful day
King, protector, paterfamilias, to his duty reconciled
Rock of the ages
Feast for all seasons
Mighty king
Mighty king
Mighty king of the wild
