Make sure your friends are trustworthy, lion cubs, otherwise you never know what might happen.

The Shark and the Monkey is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

While sitting in a tree by the seashore, Monkey tosses a brightly colored fruit into the water. A passing shark finds the fruit and eats it. Craving more, he comes to the surface and begs Monkey to throw him more of the delicious fruits. Happy to oblige, Monkey does so, and the two become fast friends.

One day, Shark invites Monkey to come visit his family and friends, and Monkey agrees, wanting to see the ocean. However, once out at sea, Shark admits that he is bringing Monkey's heart to the shark king, who is ill and in need of a monkey's heart in order to survive. Thinking fast, Monkey tells Shark that his heart is still in the tree, so Shark begrudgingly returns him to land, where Monkey scurries up a tree and laughs at him. The two promptly end their friendship.
