The Selfish Hare is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.
Synopsis
The animals are digging a well in order to survive a drought, but Hare refuses to pitch in. When the time finally comes for the animals to get a drink, Hare scares them off with loud noises and takes the water for himself, bathing in it so that it becomes dirty.
The next day, the animals find that their water supply has become muddy, and they vow revenge on Hare. In secret, they construct an animal out of mud and leave it in the midst of the pond, where Hare finds it waiting for him. When the creature doesn't respond to Hare's questions, Hare begins to hit and kick it, but his arms and legs become stuck to the hopelessly muddy creature. Through Hare's struggles, the other animals approach the water hole and beat Hare with sticks until they're convinced that he's learned his lesson. Once free, Hare bolts for the grass, where he remains to this day.
