You have to be brave to defend the truth, sometimes – but it pays off!

The Ostriches' Chicks is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

An ostrich couple is struggling to keep track of their twenty chicks, so it is all-too-easy for Lion to trick the young ones into coming to his den, where he plans to eat them one by one. Soon enough, the parent ostriches return home and follow Lion's tracks to where they can hear their chicks peeping from outside the cave. After threatening Lion for taking their children, the parent ostriches call a meeting of animals and beg them to help rescue their chicks, but the animals refuse, being too afraid of Lion.

Only Mongoose, a brave and clever animal, agrees to help rescue the chicks. She manages to goad Lion out of his den and jumps into an ant heap, secretly escaping out a back exit. Unaware of Mongoose's escape, Lion hovers day and night outside the heap, waiting to pounce, but she never shows. At last, Lion collapses, having not eaten for days, and the ostrich parents steal back their young from his cave.
