Hyena and bush cat have never been the cleverest of creatures. This story shows just how short-sighted and naive they can be!

The House that Built Itself is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

Hyena is looking for a new place to build her home. When she finally finds the right spot, she resolves to spend the next day clearing out any excess grass, but Serval happens upon the same spot and clears out the grass right away. Upon seeing the grass cleared, Hyena levels out the ground, and Serval returns to see the ground already leveled for her. She collects several tree trunks and piles them nearby, and Hyena later assembles them into a wall on the earth.

With the house nearly complete, Serval constructs a bamboo roof, and Hyena thatches the roof. For her final move, Serval splits the house in two, with one room intended to be for her and her husband and the other intended to be for her children. Hyena had resolved to do the same thing, so she is pleased to find the house already divided when she returns. On the chosen move-in day, Hyena and Serval unpack in separate rooms but are soon alerted to the other's presence and flee the house. Not long after this, they encounter one another and discover the truth. To this day, they can't bring themselves to face each other.
