The Elephants' Graveyard is a magazine story inspired by The Lion King. It was published in three issues of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series as part of the Hakuna Matata magazine series.

Synopsis

A jealous Harak attempts to assassinate his sister, Belee, and it is up to Simba and his friends, Timon and Pumbaa, to stop him.

Plot

Part 1

The Elephants' Graveyard begins by introducing Simba, the self-exiled prince of the Pride Lands, and his friends, Timon and Pumbaa. At the start of the story, Simba and his friends are paling around in the jungle when they encounter Belee, a lost baby elephant. After hearing her tearful story, the friends agree to help her look for her herd.

During the search, Timon is attacked by a giant eagle named Claws, but Simba swipes his friend to safety, scaring off the hulking eagle. Despite this minor victory, the friends fail to find Belee's herd and settle down for the night. Fortunately, Belee's mother Ashtaa finds them the following day.

Part 2

After catching up with her daughter, Ashtaa invites Simba and his friends to join the herd in their journey to an elephants' graveyard. The friends accept, and the herd rejoices the return of Belee, save Harak, Belee's jealous older brother, who plots with Claws to get his sister killed.

When the herd reaches the graveyard, Ashtaa stays with her aunt, Darann, who is nearly at the end of her life. Meanwhile, Belee and her friends scamper off to play, giving Harak the perfect opportunity to strike. Simba happens to overhear Harak plotting with Claws, and Harak orders his companion to trap the young lion in a bone cage. Helpless to stop them, Simba watches as Claws and Harak move out to kill Belee.

Part 3

Oblivious to the trouble they're in, Belee and her friends continue to play together. Luckily, Timon and Pumbaa stumble across a trapped Simba, whom they spring free. Together, the three friends rush to Belee's aid, and Simba pounces on Harak, who tries furiously to rid himself of the pesky lion cub. Belee sees her brother being attacked and attempts to save him, but a pile of bones buries both her and Simba, leaving Harak horrified at what he has done.

In a miracle survival, Belee and Simba climb out unharmed, and the situation is related to Ashtaa, who chides Harak for his jealous behavior and assures him that she loves him just as much as she loves Belee. With everything now in order, the herd sets back out for the jungle, and Simba bids his friends farewell.
