You may think food is the most important thing in the world – but it isn't. You'll find that out for yourself one day. In the meantime, listen to this tale.

The Dove and the Hen is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

A dove and a hen live in the wild on the outskirts of a village. When food becomes scarce, the dove suggests that she fly up the country, while the hen enters the village, and if either finds a source of food, she will notify the other. The hen agrees and wanders into the village, where she encounters a kind woman who feeds her and ties her to a tree.

Though the hen does not like being tied up, she enjoys being brought food and water. Eventually, she grows to be fat and lazy, and is encountered by the dove, who has been struggling to feed herself in the country. The dove questions why the hen is tied up, and the hen answers that the woman wants to prevent her from leaving. She then invites the dove to come at twilight and see for herself.

At twilight, the dove returns to find that the hen is gone. She asks a nearby cat where her friend is, and the cat replies that the hen has been eaten by the woman. With this revelation, the dove returns to the country, deciding that it is better to be half-starved than dead.
