We're our own crew.
―Tano on his alliance with Nne[src]

Tano is a male hyena. He is a member of Jasiri's clan.

Initially, Tano was a member of Janja's clan. He served loyally under Janja until he was promoted to be one of the clan's seconds-in-command alongside his clanmate, Nne. After being promoted, the two hyenas made plans to trick the Lion Guard and score an easy meal of oryxes. They proceeded to abandon Janja and hunt the oryxes on their own. However, their plot was thwarted by Kion, who used the Roar of the Elders to keep them from hurting the oryxes.

After the incident, Tano rejoined Janja's clan as a subordinate. Along with the rest of his clan, he became a member of Scar's army. However, when Scar betrayed the clan, Tano and his fellow hyenas defected and integrated into Jasiri's clan.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Tano lived in the Outlands as a member of Janja's clan.[1]

First skirmish with the Lion Guard[]

Tano spent time with his clan in the Outlands. When a butterfly landed on Janja's head, Tano laughed along with his clanmates. Later, he followed Janja into the Pride Lands to attack a herd of gazelles. However, he was thwarted by Fuli and eventually driven off fully by Kion, who used the Roar of the Elders on the entire clan.[1]

Skirmish with Jasiri[]

Tano joined his clan in attacking Jasiri. Though Tano and his clanmates initially had the upper hand, Kion joined Jasiri in battle and drove the hyenas away with the Roar of the Elders. As the clan fled, Jasiri laughed.[2]

Kidnapping Kiara[]

Tano participated in ambushing Kiara at Broken Rock, as Janja hoped to ransom her for Simba's kingdom. However, when the Lion Guard arrived in Kiara's defense, Janja called for a retreat.[3]

Hunting Dogo[]

When Dogo the jackal pup invaded the hyenas' dens, Tano and his clan began to chase him. They eventually cornered Dogo in a canyon, but the Lion Guard came to the pup's rescue. Happy to have Dogo off his paws, Janja let Kion take responsibility for the pup, and the clan returned to their territory.[4]

Bunga's trespassing[]

When Bunga wandered into the Outlands, he got surrounded by Tano and his clanmates. Fuli soon arrived to rescue Bunga, and the clan chased them along a river of lava. Just before the clan could defeat them, the rest of the Lion Guard arrived and chased them away.[5]

Temporary leadership of Janja's clan[]

Nne and Tano drive Cheezi and Chungu from the Outlands.

While the Lion Guard was patrolling the Pride Lands, Tano and his clanmates spied on them from a nearby ridge. Janja planned to attack a herd of wildebeests once the team was out of sight, but he ended up slipping on mud, which gave the clan away. A furious Kion then used the Roar of the Elders to blow them back into the Outlands.

After the failed attack, Janja vented his rage at Cheezi and Chungu, and accused them of always messing up his plans. As a result, he banished them from the clan. He then appointed Nne and Tano in their place and ordered them to drive Cheezi and Chungu out of the Outlands. The two obeyed and immediately began barking and snarling at Cheezi and Chungu until they fled to the Pride Lands.

Nne Tano plot

Nne and Tano plot to sideline the Lion Guard and score a meal of oryxes.

After Cheezi and Chungu's exile, Nne and Tano proposed a plan to Janja: they bait the Lion Guard with a stampede of antelope, then change direction and attack a herd of oryxes instead. Impressed by the ingeniousness of the plan, Janja agreed.

Together, the three started a stampede of antelope, and Nne and Tano forced Janja to hide from the Lion Guard with them. However, as they began to chase the herd of oryxes, they betrayed Janja by forcing him off the edge of a high cliff. Though the two managed to corner the herd in a dead-end canyon, the Lion Guard arrived, and Kion expelled the two hyenas by using the Roar of the Elders.[6]

Attack on Nala[]

Nne, Tano, and Chungu surround Nala.

When Janja and his clan invaded the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard drove them back into the Outlands. However, once the Lion Guard departed, Janja led his clan back into the kingdom, and the Lion Guard rushed back to stop them. Before the team could reach the hyenas, the clan ran into Kion's mother, Nala, who ordered Janja to return to his territory. Instead of heeding Nala's warning, Janja surrounded her with his cronies and ordered an attack. Just then, Kion arrived and, seeing his mother in danger, used the Roar of the Elders in a rage. The resulting blast was so powerful that it knocked the hyenas back into the Outlands.[7]

Scar's resurrection[]

Tano and his allies plot to summon the spirit of Scar.

The dry season began, and the Lion Guard became busier than ever. During their patrol, Ono informed his friends that Janja's clan was attacking Ma Tembo's herd. The Lion Guard arrived at the scene and were shocked that the hyenas would risk hunting elephants. The team proceeded to drive the clan away.

Later, Tano and his clan attacked the baboons who had started following Ma Tembo's herd. The Lion Guard arrived just in time, and Kion blasted the hyenas away with the Roar of the Elders.

Tano and his clan resolve to kidnap Kiara.

Tano and his crew returned to the Outlands, where they saw Ushari. Janja lamented how the Lion Guard kept driving him and his clan away from the Pride Lands, and Ushari revealed that that was because Kion had been getting advice from Mufasa. He added that if the hyenas wanted to stop the Lion Guard, they should find a way to talk to one of the Great Lions of the Past themselves, and he reminded Janja that there was one Great Lion who had always helped hyenas: Scar. He reasoned that if Kion could talk to Mufasa, there must be a way for them to talk to Scar.

Janja and Ushari decided to get Makini's bakora staff and attack one of Kion's loved ones so as to draw him to the volcano and incite his wrath. Per Janja's orders, Tano and his clan kidnapped Kiara and took Makini's bakora staff. While the rest of the Guard rescued her, Janja tricked Kion into using the Roar out of anger, which caused the volcano to erupt. Janja promptly threw Makini's staff into the volcano, and Scar was successfully summoned.[8]

Assassination attempt on Jasiri[]

Tano flees Ono's attack.

In the Outlands, Jasiri played with two hyena pups, Tunu and Wema. Janja watched from afar and ordered Tano and the rest of his clan to attack the trio. In the midst of the fight, Janja forced Jasiri, Tunu, and Wema into an open steam vent, where lava was steadily rising to the surface. As the clan gathered around, preventing any attempt at escape, Jasiri's sister, Madoa, resolved to get Kion's help.

The Lion Guard arrived at the scene and engaged the hyenas in a fight until the clan had effectively been steered away from the edge of the steam vent. With the hyenas out of the way, Kion ordered Beshte to push a large rock into the lava flow, which allowed Jasiri and the pups to clamber to safety. Frightened, Tano and the rest of the clan fled.[9]

Kidnapping Zazu[]

Tano and his clan tried to keep the Lion Guard from rescuing a kidnapped Zazu. However, the hyenas were defeated.[10]

Attack on Rafiki[]

Tano and his clan fought Rafiki and the Lion Guard, but they were defeated and forced to retreat.[11]

Defeat in the volcano[]

Tano and the rest of the Army of Scar cornered the Lion Guard in the midst of the Outlands. Later, the army trapped the Lion Guard in the volcano. However, they were defeated when Kion used the Roar of the Elders to clear a path of escape.[12]

Occupation of Kilio Valley[]

After Kilio Valley burned to the ground, Scar ordered Tano and the rest of the Army of Scar to remain in the valley so that they might keep the territory. Janja attempted to appoint himself the leader of the army, but Kiburi, Mzingo, and Reirei protested vehemently. The villains then began to compete over who should be in charge of the valley while the Lion Guard looked on.[13]

Skirmish with Kinyonga[]

The hyenas attempted to block up a river, but the Lion Guard camouflaged themselves and launched a surprise attack. As the hyenas retreated, they wondered how the Lion Guard had managed to learn such a trick. Kinyonga suddenly appeared and took the credit. Her unexpected appearance startled the hyenas, who fell into the river and careened over the edge of Hakuna Matata Falls.[14]

Hyena Resistance[]

Tano faced off against the Hyena Resistance along with the rest of his clan. The Army of Scar was ultimately defeated.[15]

Attack on Makuu's watering hole[]

Scar decided to attack Makuu's watering hole since the crocodiles' alliance with Kion was fraying. The Army of Scar, including Tano and his clan, besieged Makuu's float. Ono witnessed the battle and reported his findings to Kion. Together, the Lion Guard and their Pride Lander allies stormed the watering hole and fought off the Army of Scar.[16]

Attack on Mizimu Grove[]

At Mizimu Grove, Rafiki and Simba announced Makini's mpando mpaya. In the midst of the celebration, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers rose up to defend themselves. The battle paused when Scar appeared in the flames and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands. Frightened by Scar's unexpected appearance, the remaining Pride Landers fled Mizimu Grove. Kion then used the Roar of the Elders to defeat the Outlanders.[17]

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

Along with his clan, Tano lured the Lion Guard into the Lair of the Lion Guard. However, Scar betrayed the hyenas by setting fire to the Lair in the hopes that both the clan and the Guard would perish. However, with the Guard's help, Tano and his allies escaped to safety and joined forces with the Pride Landers.[18]

Physical appearance[]

Tano is a small but compact hyena, with a slight hunch on his back. His fur is pale gray, while his back, eye rims, and muzzle are a darker gray. His eyes, mane, paws, and tail are black.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Despite his unassuming nature, Tano is clever and ruthless. He took no shame in betraying Janja; he even acted derisively toward him and insulted his intelligence. Ultimately, it was Tano's arrogance that led to his downfall, as he failed to respect Kion and the great power of the Roar of the Elders.[6] Though Nne and Tano betrayed Janja, they eventually reconciled with him and began to follow his orders again. They also made amends with the Lion Guard and came to respect the Circle of Life.[18]

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Tano's name means "five" in Swahili.[20]
