You see the pale crescent moon high up in the night sky. Well, once he was as bright as the sun. Shall I tell you how he lost his colour?
Rafiki

Sun and Moon is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

Sun and his friend, Moon, visit the river together with their families. Upon reaching the river, Sun suggests that he get in first so that when the water starts bubbling, Moon will know to get in as well. However, once out of sight of Moon, Sun and his family throw fire and burning branches into the river to make it start bubbling, and Moon jumps in with his family. For a long while, Moon and his family splash through the river, unsuspecting of any problems, but when they get back out, Moon realizes that all his color has been sucked away.

When he sees Moon for the first time, Sun breaks into laughter and proclaims that he is certainly brighter than Moon now. Deeply wounded, Moon swears his revenge. Soon enough, a famine strikes, and Moon suggests that they kill and eat their families to survive. He tells Sun that he will take his family upstream and slaughter them first so that when the river begins to run with blood, Sun will know to do the same to his family. However, once out of sight of Sun, Moon throws red dirt into the river, tricking Sun into killing his own family. To this day, Sun shines brightly alone in the sky, while Moon rules the night with his wife and children at his side.
