How True, Zazu?

You can't do anything without that flying newspaper telling the whole world about it.
—Pembe about Zazu

Pembe is an elephant who appears in The Lion King: Six New Adventures. She is a Pridelander.

Appearance

Large and powerful, Pembe is a force to be reckoned with. Her thick bulk and rough skin give her a strong physical advantage, as do her long twin horns. Her skin is wrinkled and dark gray, a perfect mix of her son's dark blue and her daughter's pale gray. Like most elephants, Pembe has black eyes.

Personality

Well, Zazu was only doing his job. He has to keep the king informed.
—Pembe to Cheka

Though Pembe's personality is not explored in the books, it is quite clear that she is a hard-working character with an instinct to do good, as seen when she defends the Pride Lands from an army ant attack. She also cares very deeply for her children and desires for them to learn as well as have fun. She is more understanding of Zazu than the other parents are, despite her annoyance at the hornbill's prying ways.

Information

Backstory

Pembe is an elephant who lived during the reign of Mufasa. She often got spied on by Zazu, who reported her everyday doings to Mufasa. She later served under the reign of Simba.

Pembe can be seen arguing with Nassor, an antagonistic giraffe.

How True, Zazu?

But how can we stop millions of ants?

Pembe in How True, Zazu?

Pembe is first seen joining in on Pridelander gossip with her friends, Muwa and Nzee. While the adults consider calling together a council of animals to discuss Zazu's nosiness, the children move away to play in a water hole.

Later in the story, Pembe helps to stop an army ant attack. Not long after this, Cheka, Lulu, and their friends confess to lying about Zazu in order to get him in trouble. Though Pembe is furious, Mufasa is fair and instructs the young animals to help gather news around the Pride Lands in order to make up for their earlier mistake.
