Outlanders, I know we can all get along here in the Outlands. Just so long as we respect the Circle of Life.
Jasiri gives a speech to the Outlanders upon becoming their queen[src]

Outlanders are the inhabitants of the Outlands. They are governed by their queen, Jasiri.

History[]

Zira's exile[]

The Outsiders are a group of lions led by a lioness named Zira. Simba banished them from the Pride Lands before any of you were born.
Rafiki tells the story of the Outsiders to the Lion Guard[src]

Upon Simba's ascension to the throne of Pride Rock, Zira challenged his right to rule, asserting that her son, Kovu, had been Scar's hand-chosen heir. Simba pointed out that Scar had never been the true king, which enraged Zira and incited her to attack Simba in retribution. After defeating her, Simba banished her, her family, and her followers to the Outlands. There, they formed a pride of Outlanders known as the Outsiders.[1]

Kiara's encounter with Kovu[]

An Outsider doesn't need anybody. I take care of myself!
―Kovu[src]

Kiara befriends an Outlander cub named Kovu.

One day, Simba's young daughter, Kiara, strayed into the Outlands, where she met Kovu. Though at first hostile toward her, Kovu eventually backed down and bragged that, as an Outsider, he could take care of himself. Just then, the cubs were attacked by crocodiles and only narrowly escaped into the Pride Lands. Simba and Zira arrived in the defense of their children, and Simba reminded Zira that she was banished from his kingdom. Zira offered Kovu to Simba as his "pound of flesh," but he merely ordered her to take Kovu and leave. With a final threatening laugh, Zira picked up Kovu in her jaws and carried him back to their pride's home.

Once at their home, Zira lectured Kovu for having befriended Simba's daughter and mocked him for thinking that they could be friends. However, while chastising Kovu, Zira formed a plot to use him to infiltrate Simba's pride, assassinate Simba, and become the new king of Pride Rock.[2]

Janja's invasion of the Pride Lands[]

A new Lion Guard could be very bad news for us hyenas...and all the other Outlanders.
Janja[src]
ReturnoftheRoar1002

Janja leads his clan in an attack on the Pride Lands.

Upon discovering that Kion was founding a new Lion Guard, Mzingo reported the news to Janja. He, in turn, deduced that a new Lion Guard would mean that the Outlanders could no longer eat whatever they wanted. In order to prevent this from happening, he resolved to attack the Pride Lands with his clan before the Lion Guard was ready and take down as many animals as they could.

Along with Mzingo, Janja's clan invaded the Pride Lands and attacked a herd of gazelles. However, the Lion Guard arrived on the scene and fought them off. Kion finished the fight by blowing the hyenas out of the Pride Lands with the Roar of the Elders. Despite his clan's defeat, Janja swore that matters between them and the Lion Guard were not over.[3]

Kion's friendship with Jasiri[]

Come on, boys. Let's remind Jasiri what happens to someone who wanders into our part of the Outlands!
―Janja, after Jasiri intrudes on his clan's territory[src]

One day, while chasing Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu out of the Pride Lands, Kion fell into a river and got swept into the Outlands. He attempted to navigate the landscape alone but ended up needing the help of a hyena named Jasiri. Though at first tense around one another, the two slowly became friends and bonded over their mutual respect for the Circle of Life.

Kion and Jasiri work together to fight off Janja's clan.

After dropping Kion off at the border of the Outlands and the Pride Lands, Jasiri attempted to return home, only to cross through Janja's territory and get attacked by his clan. Overhearing Jasiri's peril, Kion arrived in her defense, and the two fought off Janja's clan together. Kion then used the Roar of the Elders to blow the enemy hyenas away.

After the fight, Kion introduced Jasiri to the rest of the Lion Guard, and the two expressed a desire to see each other again someday.[4]

Janja's attempted kidnapping of Kiara[]

Janja: Be a shame if their family squabbles led to chaos in the Pride Lands.
Mzingo: From which we all might profit.

Janja plots to use Kiara as leverage against her father, Simba.

When Simba temporarily left Kiara in charge of the Pride Lands, Mzingo observed her rivalry with her brother, Kion. He reported what he had seen to Janja, who resolved to use their conflict to his advantage. Per Janja's orders, Mzingo flew to Pride Rock and told Kiara that Janja simply wanted peace with the Pride Landers. He added that, were it not for Kion and his Lion Guard, this would be possible. Kiara asked why Janja had not come himself, and Mzingo replied that Janja was not welcome in the Pride Lands but that she could meet with him at Broken Rock, which was neutral ground. Kiara promised to think about it, and Mzingo left to relay the news to Janja.

Later, Kiara traveled to Broken Rock, only to be surrounded by Janja and his clan. To Kiara's horror, Janja proclaimed that he planned to use her as leverage against Simba. However, the Lion Guard arrived and fought the hyenas off, freeing Kiara from their control.[5]

Attack by Reirei's pack[]

You can't invite him to Kupatana. He's an Outlander.
―Fuli on Dogo[src]

Reirei's pack attacks the Pride Landers during Kupatana.

On the day of Kupatana, the Lion Guard overheard a jackal pup, Dogo, being chased through the Outlands by Janja's clan. For the sake of Kupatana, they saved the pup and allowed him to come to the Pride Lands with them. Once in the Pride Lands, Beshte and Bunga invited Dogo to Kupatana, but Fuli and Ono protested that Outlanders were not allowed to attend Kupatana. Though torn, Kion allowed Dogo to come to the celebration, as he was just "one little jackal."

Later, Dogo's entire family came to the Pride Lands and caused trouble by stealing the Pride Landers' food. Kion reprimanded them for their behavior and only allowed them to stay in the Pride Lands if they promised to stop stealing from other animals. Despite the jackals' promise to follow the laws of the Pride Lands, they attacked the Pride Landers during the Kupatana celebration at Mizimu Grove. Together, the Pride Landers fought the jackals off, and Simba banished them back to the Outlands.[6]

Kion's encounter with the Outsiders[]

No, no! They are not just any lions. They are the Outsiders!
―Rafiki on Zira's pride[src]
2016-11-12-21 46 52

The Outsiders face off against Jasiri and the Lion Guard.

One day, the Outsiders drove Jasiri and her clan from their watering hole. Jasiri appealed to Kion for help, and he pleaded for peace on her behalf to Zira. Instead of negotiating with Kion, Zira offered to teach him what she knew about the Roar of the Elders. In the hopes of learning more about the Roar and convincing Zira to share the watering hole with Jasiri's clan, Kion agreed to speak with her alone.

However, when Kion and Zira disagreed over lions' role in the Circle of Life, Zira surrounded Kion with her pride and attempted to force him to ally with her. Just in time, Jasiri and the Lion Guard arrived and helped Kion fight off Zira's pride. Once the Outsiders had been cornered, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to blow them away. The Outsiders ended up landing next to the termite mounds, and Zira declared that the area would serve as their new home.[1]

Scar's resurrection[]

Ushari: But I'm just a snake. Wouldn't you want something meatier?
Janja: Oh, we would, if it weren't for Kion forcin' us to stay in the Outlands instead of lettin' us eat whatever we want in the Pride Lands.
—Janja and Ushari, as the former attempts to eat the latter[src]
2017-08-04-02 12 16

Janja and Ushari resurrect the spirit of Scar.

After seasons of being trampled by the Lion Guard, Ushari began to resent them. One day, he overheard Makini talking to Kion about her ability to commune with the Great Lions of the Past and plotted to use what he had learned against the Lion Guard. Later, in the Outlands, Janja's clan nearly ate Ushari, until he convinced them that they should help him resurrect the spirit of Scar instead.

Per Ushari's instructions, the skinks spied on Makini and Rafiki, and learned that evil Lions of the Past could be summoned in fire by a bakora staff and the Roar of the Elders. In the hopes of luring Kion to the Outlands volcano, Janja's clan kidnapped Kiara and stole Makini's bakora staff. The plan worked, with the Lion Guard showing up at the volcano to rescue Kiara and Janja managing to spin Kion into such a fury that he used the Roar of the Elders inside the volcano. Janja then tossed Makini's bakora staff into the lava, and Scar's spirit was resurrected.[7]

Army of Scar[]

Recruiting Kiburi's float[]

Don't worry, Kiburi. We're all friends here. I have plans for you and your crocodiles. Big plans indeed!
―Scar recruits Kiburi's float[src]

When the Lion Guard accidentally woke Makuu's float from hibernation, Makuu began to butt heads with one of his underlings, Kiburi. Eventually, the tension boiled over, and Kiburi challenged Makuu to a mashindano. Upon learning of the situation from his skink spies, Scar resolved to use the conflict as a means of assassinating Simba. Per Scar's orders, Ushari convinced Kiburi to send some crocodile minions to kill Simba while the royal family was distracted by the mashindano.

During the mashindano, the plan went underway, but the Lion Guard foiled it. Unaware that his plan had failed, Kiburi announced to the gathered animals that he had killed Simba and was therefore the new ruler of the Pride Lands. However, Simba revealed himself to the crowd and deferred Kiburi's punishment to Makuu. Makuu, in turn, declared that Kiburi was no longer a part of his float, so Simba banished Kiburi to the Outlands, along with his followers.

In the Outlands, Kiburi confronted Ushari for having led him astray, but Ushari promised to show him something "special." He then led Kiburi and his followers to Scar, who recruited them for his army.[8]

Attack on Beshte[]

Chungu: Uh...why do we care?
Scar: Because if the Lion Guard's strongest is alone in the Outlands, it's the perfect opportunity to eliminate him!
—Scar plans an attack on Beshte, who is lost in the Outlands[src]

The skinks lure Beshte into a trap at Rocky Plateau.

When Beshte got swept into the Outlands by floodwaters, he attempted to find his way back to the Pride Lands. The skinks informed Scar of the situation, and he, in turn, plotted to eliminate Beshte. Under Scar's orders, the skinks lured Beshte to Rocky Plateau, where Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu trapped him in a dead-end and began hurling large boulders at him from above.

Just in time, the Lion Guard arrived in Beshte's defense, and Kion defeated the hyenas with the Roar of the Elders. Afterward, Janja opted not to inform Scar of their failure, but Ushari approached and warned the hyenas that Scar wished to speak with them.[9]

Attack on Jasiri's clan[]

We cannot have an ally of the Lion Guard here in the Outlands. Get rid of her. Immediately.
―Scar to Janja on Jasiri[src]

While on a mission to recruit the jackals for Scar's army, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu ran into Jasiri, who claimed Janja's land as her own due to his failure to re-mark his territory for the dry season. Enraged, Janja attacked Jasiri, but she overpowered him and drove him out of the territory.

Janja's clan traps Jasiri, Tunu, and Wema in a steam vent.

In defeat, the hyenas returned to the volcano and reported to Ushari that Jasiri was to blame for their failure to recruit the jackals. At the mention of a fearless hyena, Scar expressed interest in recruiting Jasiri for their army, but Janja explained that she respected the Circle of Life and was friends with the Lion Guard. Deeming her to be a threat instead, Scar ordered Janja to eliminate her.

Heeding Scar's command, Janja and his clan trapped Jasiri and two hyena cubs, Tunu and Wema, in an open steam vent. Jasiri's sister, Madoa, appealed to the Lion Guard for help, and they fought off Janja's clan and helped Jasiri and the cubs escape the steam vent. Once Janja's clan had fled the scene, Jasiri noted how unusually zealous Janja had been in his attack on her, but Kion simply blamed the dry season for the heightened tensions.[10]

Alliance with Kenge[]

Go back and take all of the tikiti melons. If the elephants don't have enough water, it will mean the end of their herd, and perhaps the Circle of Life as well!

Kenge and the hyenas attempt to steal some tikiti melons.

One day, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu invaded the Pride Lands and attempted to steal some tikiti melons from the elephants. However, the Lion Guard arrived in time to stop them and drive them back into the Outlands. At the volcano, the hyenas reported their failure to Scar, who explained that the water inside the melons was vital to the survival of the Pride Lands' elephants. In the hopes of destroying the elephants and the Circle of Life, Scar ordered the hyenas to return and attempt to steal the melons again. In the face of Janja's protests, Ushari offered to connect him, Cheezi, and Chungu with a powerful friend of his: a monitor lizard named Kenge.

Alongside Kenge, the hyenas returned to the Pride Lands, and Kenge began attacking some Pride Landers at a watering hole. The Lion Guard tried to stop him, but he used his bite to paralyze Beshte, Fuli, and Kion. Eventually, Bunga managed to fend off Kenge with his stink, and Ono fetched Makini to help heal his paralyzed friends.

Shortly afterward, the hyenas and Kenge traveled to the tikiti melon patch and began to steal the elephants' melons. Bunga and Ono arrived to stop them, only for Kenge to bite and paralyze them. As the predators escaped with their melons, Bunga realized that he was immune to Kenge's venom and resolved to take the melons back.

Along with Makini, Bunga confronted Kenge and used the lizard's trigger word, "little," to spin him into a fury and cause him to accidentally bite and paralyze his hyena allies. In the midst of the fight, a fully healed Lion Guard arrived, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to banish Kenge and the hyenas back to the Outlands. The team then rolled the tikiti melons back to their patch in the Pride Lands.[11]

Kidnapping Zazu[]

That annoying little bird is the king's royal adviser. He knows Simba's strengths, his weaknesses, who his allies are. In short, Zazu is keeper of all the secrets of the Pride Lands.
―Scar schemes to use Zazu for his own nefarious purposes[src]

Per Scar's instructions, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu kidnapped Simba's majordomo, Zazu. While Cheezi and Chungu monitored Zazu, Janja reported his clan's success to Scar. He, in turn, commanded the hyenas to interrogate Zazu about the secrets of the Pride Lands.

Meanwhile, Zazu tricked Cheezi and Chungu into letting him out of his bone cage, but Janja arrived in time to capture him once more. Once Zazu had been adequately contained, Janja demanded to know the secrets of the Pride Lands, but Zazu refused. In an effort to get Zazu to talk, Janja backed his cage up against a steam vent and burned his tail feathers. Seeming to give in, Zazu told Janja what he knew about the Pride Lands, but he only revealed trivial, unhelpful information.

Nearby, the Lion Guard searched for Zazu and overheard him talking to the hyenas. Together, they attacked Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu, and freed Zazu from his cage. With Zazu no longer under their control, the hyenas retreated, and the Lion Guard returned to the Pride Lands with Zazu.[12]

Kiburi's attack on Makuu's watering hole[]

Your days of leadership are over, Makuu!
―Kiburi, as his float attacks Makuu's watering hole[src]

After witnessing Makuu turn down Hodari's request to join his float, Shupavu and Njano mused that he would make a useful ally, as he was friends with the Lion Guard. In the Outlands, Njano pitched the idea of Hodari becoming a member of Kiburi's float to Kiburi, who expressed doubt over Hodari being a gecko. However, he reluctantly allowed Hodari to engage in the traditional initiation spar and ordered Tamka to let the gecko win. Once Hodari had officially been deemed a member of the float, Kiburi resolved to enter the Pride Lands and seize control of a watering hole.

Kiburi's float attempts to seize control of Makuu's watering hole.

As one, Kiburi and his float entered the Pride Lands, and Kiburi attempted to use Hodari's friendship with the Lion Guard to appeal to Kion. However, Kion ordered him and his float to return to the Outlands, and they reluctantly turned back. Once in the Outlands again, Kiburi questioned Hodari on the battle tactics of Makuu's float, and the gecko shared all that he knew.

After learning what they could from Hodari, Kiburi and his float attacked Makuu's float at their watering hole and used the enemy crocodiles' own battle moves against them. As Kiburi attacked Makuu, Hodari reminded him that he could not seize control of Makuu's float without calling for a mashindano, but he ignored Hodari and continued to fight Makuu. Before long, the Lion Guard arrived and launched into battle against Kiburi's float, and Hodari distracted Kiburi long enough for Makuu to defeat him. Kion then used the Roar of the Elders to blow Kiburi and his followers back to the Outlands.[13]

Attack on Rafiki[]

These first attacks were merely a test to see if Kion would react as I predicted. The next attack is the one that counts. Because next time, your target will be Rafiki!
―Scar instructs his army[src]

Scar schemes with his army to attack Rafiki.

Under orders from Scar, Janja and his clan attacked Twiga and her daughter, Juhudi. At the same time, Reirei's pack attacked a group of pangolins on the other side of the Pride Lands. Forced to split up, Beshte and Kion pursued the hyenas, while Bunga, Fuli, and Ono rushed off to save the pangolins from the jackals. Beshte advised Kion to use the Roar of the Elders on Janja and his clan, but Kion worried that he might harm Twiga and Juhudi. Meanwhile, Twiga kicked Janja away from her and Juhudi, and the hyenas retreated. At the same time, Fuli struggled to take on the jackals by herself, as Bunga was lagging behind, and it was only when the pangolins used their stink on Reirei's pack that they fled.

After the attacks, the Outlanders convened with Scar at the volcano. There, he revealed that he had simply been testing how Kion would react to a double attack and that the Army's next target would be Rafiki. Janja and Reirei began to argue over who should lead the attack, but Scar settled the debate by putting Janja in charge of fighting Rafiki while Reirei and her pack created a diversion elsewhere. Once the meeting had adjourned, Janja and Reirei argued over which species was smarter: hyenas or jackals.

Janja's clan and Reirei's pack face off against the Lion Guard and Rafiki.

Later, the jackals chased a herd of gazelles in the Pride Lands, and the Lion Guard pursued them in an attempt to stop them. However, when Ono spotted the hyenas attacking Rafiki elsewhere, Kion sent the Lion Guard's ally, Tamaa, to deal with the jackals while the Lion Guard defended Rafiki from Janja's clan. While Tamaa cornered the jackals by mimicking the Lion Guard's voices, Rafiki fought off the hyenas single-handedly. Before long, however, the jackals caught on to the Lion Guard's scheme and left to reinforce Janja's attack.

In the meantime, the Lion Guard worked with Rafiki to defeat Janja's clan. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Janja attempted to flee the battle, but Scar manifested in a nearby fire and forced him to continue fighting. Kion happened to spot Scar's appearance, but before he could investigate, Tamaa warned him of the jackals' encroaching attack. Together, the Lion Guard, Rafiki, and Tamaa managed to defeat the Army of Scar, and they fled back to the Outlands. After the fight, Kion and Rafiki spotted the Mark of Evil on the ground, and Rafiki resolved to consult the paintings of the past about the matter.[14]

Assassination attempt on Simba[]

Friends, today, we will end Simba's reign and destroy the Lion Guard.
―Scar rallies his army[src]

At the Outlands volcano, Scar explained to his followers that he was sending Sumu the scorpion to disrupt the Kumbuka celebration and fatally sting Simba. Once he had received his instructions from Scar, Sumu snuck up on Simba and stung his tail, which caused him to collapse. Though the Lion Guard attempted to catch Sumu, he escaped back into the Outlands.

Sumu stings Simba as part of Scar's plot.

Meanwhile, Rafiki tended to Simba and informed the Lion Guard that the only cure for Sumu's venom was volcanic ash. At the same time, Scar received word of Sumu's success and commanded his army to intercept the Lion Guard as they entered the Outlands. Together, Janja, Kiburi, Reirei, and their respective groups slowed the Lion Guard's progress toward the volcano.

Eventually, the Lion Guard reached the volcano's inner chamber and retrieved some volcanic ash. Before they could leave, however, Scar revealed himself to Kion and admitted that he was responsible for Simba's critical condition. Despite Scar's confession, Kion urged his teammates to return to the Pride Lands so they could save Simba's life. At that moment, Fuli realized that the previous attacks by Janja, Kiburi, and Reirei had been Scar's doing all along, and Scar ordered his army to corner the Lion Guard on a ledge over the lava.

In order to escape, Kion used precise blasts with the Roar of the Elders to defeat Scar's army. As the Lion Guard fled, Scar sent Mzingo and his parliament after them, and the vultures attempted to obtain the volcanic ash. Though the Lion Guard ultimately managed to drive the vultures off, Scar overlooked his defeated army and commented that the war had only just begun.

Later, at Pride Rock, Kion revealed to Rafiki that Scar's spirit had been resurrected, and Rafiki implored him to speak with Simba once he had recovered. Upon reconvening with the rest of the Lion Guard, Kion declared that it was their duty to protect the Pride Lands and that they could defeat Scar.[15]

Fire at Kilio Valley[]

We will take over the Pride Lands piece by piece. So, in the end...there will be nothing left for the Lion Guard to defend!
―Scar to his army[src]

The Army of Scar overtakes Kilio Valley after a devastating fire.

Per Scar's instructions, the vultures dropped fiery sticks on Kilio Valley, setting it ablaze. Though the Lion Guard attempted to put out the fire and lead Ma Tembo's herd out of the valley, the Army of Scar attacked and overwhelmed them. In order to save the elephants, the Lion Guard fled Kilio Valley, leaving it under the control of Scar's army.

With the Lion Guard gone, the various factions within Scar's army began to argue over who had performed the best. Just then, Scar manifested in a nearby ember and ordered his army to remain in Kilio Valley. He then revealed his plan to take over the Pride Lands piece by piece until there was nothing left for the Lion Guard to defend. Once Scar had gone, Janja, Kiburi, Mzingo, and Reirei argued over which of them should be in charge of Kilio Valley.[16]

Kinyonga's spy mission[]

We've got enough to deal with trying to figure out what the Outlanders are gonna do next.
―Kion[src]

When Ono attempted to spy on the Outlanders, he got chased out by Mzingo's parliament. Kinyonga happened to overhear him apologizing to Kion for his failure and volunteered to spy on Scar's army for the Lion Guard using her camaflouge skills. Though Kion was reluctant to endanger Kinyonga, she argued that she had ventured into the Outlands undetected before, and he agreed to let her take on the mission.

The skinks corner Kinyonga.

Using her camaflouge abilities, Kinyonga snuck into the Outlands volcano and overheard Scar ordering Janja to block up the river above Hakuna Matata Falls. At that moment, Shupavu noticed Kinyonga's shadow on the wall, and Ushari ordered the skinks to apprehend her. As Kinyonga fled, Ono spotted her peril, and the Lion Guard raced to her rescue. Just in time, they snuck up on the skinks using camaflouge and chased them away from Kinyonga.

That night, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu attempted to block up Hakuna Matata Falls per Scar's orders, only for the Lion Guard to camaflouge themselves and ambush the hyenas. Kinyonga likewise camaflouged herself and unexpectedly appeared before the hyenas, spooking them so badly that they fell into the river and were washed over Hakuna Matata Falls. Once at the bottom of the falls, Janja decided to lie to Scar that they had been defeated by rocks and foliage rather than the Lion Guard.[17]

Thurston's advice[]

In order to get Thurston to come with them willingly, they lied that they were bringing him to a party. Once in the Outlands, Thurston told the hyenas that the Lion Guard would sneeze uncontrollably if exposed to red flowers. Cheezi and Chungu attempted to incapacitate the Lion Guard with red flowers, but their plan failed, and Beshte chased them off.

Later, Thurston told Goigoi that the Lion Guard could not see him due to his stripes. Goigoi painted himself with stripes and attempted to sneak up on the Lion Guard, only for them to spot him and ask what he was doing. Disappointed, he retreated.

Finally, Thurston advised Nduli and Tamka to tickle the Lion Guard's bellies in order to make them fall asleep. The crocodiles tried the trick themselves, but it failed, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to dispatch of them.

Bruised and defeated, the Outlanders ran into one another in the Outlands and learned that Thurston had led all of them to failure. Together, they confronted him and threatened to eat him. Just in time, the Lion Guard arrived and chased them off, after which Thurston revealed that he had been behind all the abnormal attacks.[18]

Hyena Resistance[]

Go tell your clan that the plan is to attack Mizimu Grove again. Then, while the Guard is waiting in Mizimu Grove, you'll surround Jasiri's clan.

Jasiri inspires her clanmates to form a Hyena Resistance.

One day, the Lion Guard defended the Pride Lands from a combined attack by Janja's clan, Kiburi's float, and Reirei's pack. After the fight, Jasiri approached the Lion Guard and remarked on how strange it was that the Outlanders were working together. Kion explained that they were fighting under Scar's banner, and she decided to form a Hyena Resistance in opposition.

After convincing her clanmates to join her, Jasiri overheard Janja plotting to attack Mizimu Grove with Kiburi's float and Reirei's pack. In order to foil the Outlanders' plans, the Hyena Resistance blocked Janja's path to the Pride Lands with a rockslide, while Madoa warned the Lion Guard about the attack. Janja reported his failure to Scar, who ordered Kiburi to lead a different attack on Big Springs. This attack also failed, as did the Outlanders' next attack under Reirei's leadership.

Eventually, Njano and Shupavu discovered the Hyena Resistance's existence and informed Scar. He, in turn, commanded Janja to lay a false trail for the Lion Guard, then surround and attack the Hyena Resistance. Unaware that the Hyena Resistance was being led into a trap, Madoa told the Lion Guard that Scar was planning a huge attack on Mizimu Grove. While the Lion Guard headed to Mizimu Grove to intercept the Outlanders, Scar's army attacked the Hyena Resistance in the Outlands.

Before the Outlanders could harm Jasiri's clan, the Lion Guard arrived and fought them off. Jasiri offered Janja a place in the Hyena Resistance, but he refused. Njano and Shupavu noted that Janja had hesitated to reject Jasiri's offer and resolved to inform Scar about his conflicting loyalties.[19]

Attack on the mudpots[]

We're going to deliver Kion and his companions a little gift...of...fire.
―Scar[src]

When Kion and his friends were playing at the mudpots, Njano and Shupavu spotted them. The skinks returned to the volcano and reported what they had seen to Scar, who resolved to set fire to the nearby grasslands. Per Scar's orders, the vultures dropped fiery sticks near the mudpots, which set the area ablaze. Kion and his friends managed to escape the fire by taking shelter in a nearby aardvark burrow.[20]

Skirmish with Shujaa[]

He hear bad Outlanders hurt Pride Lands. He say, "Shujaa, go help Lion Guard! Do what Shujaa do best!"
Shujaa on Sokwe[src]

When King Sokwe of the mountain gorillas heard that Scar's army was attacking the Pride Lands, he sent Shujaa to help oppose them. No sooner had Shujaa joined forces with the Lion Guard when Ono reported that the Outlanders were attacking Big Springs. The team rushed to the rescue, and Shujaa began to throw boulders and trees at the Outlanders. In the process, he blocked several aardvark burrows, trapped hares in mud, and caused oryxes to tangle their horns. The Outlanders informed Scar of what had happened, and he ordered them to keep attacking the Pride Lands in the hopes that Shujaa would destroy the kingdom for them.

The Army of Scar attacks Big Springs.

Heeding Scar's advice, the Outlanders attacked a herd of sable antelope. Once more, in trying to assist the Lion Guard, Shujaa caused mass destruction to the Pride Lands, and Janja noted that Scar's plan was working. Kion soon arrived and dispatched of the Outlanders with the Roar of the Elders.

Later, the Outlanders started a fire at Big Springs. Though Beshte urged Shujaa to help the Lion Guard defeat the Outlanders, he refused out of fear that he would cause more undue harm to the Pride Lands. Forced to fight without Shujaa, Beshte rushed to Big Springs and ordered his pod to take shelter in the water while he dealt with the fire. The Lion Guard worked together to fight the Outlanders and put out the fire, but in the process, Beshte injured his leg and collapsed on the ground. Ono begged Shujaa for help, and he agreed so that he could save Beshte. Upon arriving at Big Springs, Shujaa carried Beshte to safety, defeated the Outlanders, and used dust to put out the fire.[21]

Army of Scar's attack on Makuu's watering hole[]

The Outlanders have the Pride Landers scared because they're working together. But we can do that too. Unite the Pride Landers. If we stand together, we stand stronger. And we'll be prepared for any attack that comes.

Upon observing the Pride Landers' fear of the Outlanders, the Lion Guard gathered them for training. Though Makuu attempted to teach his fellow Pride Landers how to fight, he eventually gave up and opted to look after his own float instead. Shupavu and Njano reported what had occurred to Scar, who plotted to take advantage of the crocodiles' fraying alliance with the Lion Guard by attacking Makuu's watering hole.

Together, the Army of Scar besieged Makuu's watering hole. Ono spotted the battle from afar and informed Kion, who led the Pride Landers in an attack against the Outlanders. Together, the Pride Landers drove the Outlanders out of the Pride Lands, and Makuu vowed to help his fellow Pride Landers from then on, should they ever need it.[22]

Attack on Dhahabu[]

But the water treaty with the zebras must be put to an end. I want the Pride Lands to stay thirsty. Perhaps something will happen to the queen during her visit. Something very unfortunate.
―Scar on Dhahabu[src]

Upon learning that Dhahabu was in the Pride Lands to solidify a water treaty between her kingdom and theirs, he ordered Reirei's pack to attack her. The jackals did as commanded, only to be chased away by the Lion Guard and their allies, Raha and Starehe. Later, the jackals attacked again, this time with crocodile allies. However, Raha and Starehe defeated them once again and chased them out of the Pride Lands.[23]

Attack on Mizimu Grove[]

First, we took Kilio Valley. Then, we wrecked Big Springs. And now, your precious Mizimu Grove is doomed! It's only a matter of time before all of the Pride Lands is mine!

The Army of Scar attacks Mizimu Grove.

Upon noting how spooked the Pride Landers were by the Outlanders' recent attacks, Kion invited Timon and Pumbaa to perform at Makini's mpando mpaya. That evening, the Pride Landers gathered for the mpando mpaya, only for the Army of Scar to attack them. Initially, the Pride Landers worked together to defend themselves. However, in the midst of the battle, Scar manifested in a fire and threatened to overtake the entire Pride Lands. Terrified, the Pride Landers fled Mizimu Grove, and Kion dispatched of the Outlanders using the Roar of the Elders.

Once the Army of Scar was gone, the Pride Landers deliberated whether they should leave the Pride Lands or not, and Simba told them to inform him of their decisions the following morning at Pride Rock. The next day, Kion implored the Pride Landers to follow him and led them to Mizimu Grove, where he pointed out that Makini's sapling had survived the fire. Inspired, the Pride Landers resolved to remain in the Pride Lands and resist Scar's tyranny.[24]

Mzingo's parliament's attacks[]

The Outlanders want to scare us. But I won't let that happen. Together, we'll teach them not to mess with the birds of the Pride Lands!
Hadithi[src]

One day, fiery sticks began falling from the sky, and the Lion Guard led Twiga's herd to safety. Ono attempted to find the source of the fiery sticks but had to turn back due to the high altitude. Per Beshte's suggestion, the Lion Guard recruited a martial eagle named Anga to investigate the attacks for them.

Mzingo's parliament drops fiery sticks on the Pride Lands.

No sooner had the Lion Guard recruited Anga when fiery sticks began raining from the sky again. This time, Anga was able to fly high enough to discover that Mzingo's parliament was responsible for the attacks. Upon spotting Anga, the vultures fled, and Anga reported what she had discovered to the Lion Guard. Kion suggested that they rally the Pride Lands' birds to repel the vultures' attacks, and Ono resolved to get Hadithi's help in gathering their forces.

Together, Anga and Ono employed Hadithi's help in recruiting the Pride Lands' birds. Once the birds had gathered, Hadithi inspired them to help the Lion Guard stop the vultures' fiery attacks. At that moment, the vultures began dropping fiery sticks on the Maumivu Thorn Patch, and the Pride Lander birds rushed to thwart the attack. During the ensuing battle, Hadithi got injured, and Ono rallied the Pride Lands' birds in his place. As one, the birds herded the vultures into one place, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to dispatch of them.[25]

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

The Pride Lands will never end while the Lion Guard is here. Just like this tiny tree, we'll keep growing stronger. Scar will never defeat us!

The Army of Scar confronts the Lion Guard.

Over the seasons, the Lion Guard and their allies prevented Scar's army from invading the Pride Lands. Eventually, Simba determined that they must take the fight to the Outlands, and the Pride Landers gathered at Pride Rock to train. Meanwhile, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu guarded Kilio Valley, during which Janja debated whether Jasiri was right to help the Lion Guard. Having overheard Janja's conflict, as well as the Pride Landers' plans to attack the Outlands, the skinks informed Scar of what they knew.

Later, Scar summoned Janja to the volcano and explained that he could only be defeated if Kion used his most powerful Roar inside the volcano. He then ordered Janja and his clan to distract the Lion Guard while he launched an attack on the Pride Landers. That night, Janja's clan lured the Lion Guard into the Lair of the Lion Guard, only for Scar to double-cross them by setting fire to Pride Rock and trapping them inside the Lair. Desperate and betrayed, Janja appealed to Jasiri for help.

Scar manifests in a fire at Pride Rock.

As the fire raged on, Scar manifested in the flames and boasted to the gathered Pride Landers that the Lion Guard had perished in the fire. Kion, however, revealed that they had survived. Unabated, Scar urged the Pride Landers to abandon their kingdom before it was too late and mocked Simba for lacking the power to defeat him. He then disappeared, and the fire died down.

In the wake of Scar's threat, the Pride Landers grew anxious that they could not defeat him, but Janja arrived and shared what Scar had told him about Kion's ability to destroy him using the Roar of the Elders. The Pride Landers then resolved to invade the Outlands and use Kion's Roar to destroy Scar's spirit once and for all. Unbeknownst to the Pride Landers, Scar revealed to Ushari that he had lied to Janja so that Kion would Roar inside the volcano and trigger an eruption that would destroy the Pride Lands.

Jasiri assumes leadership of the Outlanders.

The next morning, the Pride Landers invaded the Outlands. While the Pride Landers took on Scar's army, the Lion Guard broke into the volcano and confronted Scar. During the confrontation, Ushari bit Kion and injected him with venom, per Scar's orders. Scar mocked Kion for bearing the Mark of Evil, but instead of giving in to rage, Kion summoned the Great Lions of the Past to judge Scar instead. To Scar's horror, the Great Lions of the Past sent rain, which destroyed him. Ushari attempted to attack Kion in revenge, but Bunga knocked him into the lava to his death.

With Scar vanquished and his army defeated, Jasiri became the queen of the Outlands, and the various Outlander factions submitted to her leadership.[26]

Zira's plot[]

The fire rescue worked perfectly, and Simba fell for it. Now, the closer Kovu gets to the daughter, the closer he gets to Simba! And once he has Simba alone...
―Zira[src]

Over the seasons, Zira trained Kovu to become a cold-blooded killer intent on assassinating Simba. On the day of Kiara's first hunt, Nuka and Vitani set fire to the savanna, and Kovu saved Kiara from the blaze. Simba confronted Kovu for being in the Pride Lands, and Kovu requested permission to join Simba's pride. Though reluctant to accept Kovu's change of heart, Simba allowed him into the pride and reserved judgment on his character.

The Outsiders form a battle line against Simba's pride.

After spending time with Kiara, Kovu refused to kill Simba, and Vitani reported his betrayal to Zira. Shortly afterward, the Outsiders ambushed Simba and Kovu, and Simba deduced that Kovu had been conspiring against him. After an extended chase through the gorge, Simba escaped up a pile of logs, while Nuka fell and was crushed to death by falling logs. Enraged, Zira declared war on Simba and led the Outsiders in an attack on the Pride Lands. Meanwhile, Simba exiled Kovu from the Pride Lands, as he believed that Kovu had been involved in Zira's ambush.

Upon being warned by Zazu of the Outsiders' approach, Simba's pride confronted the Outsiders, and the two prides began to fight. In the midst of the battle, Kovu and Kiara intervened and begged their feuding parents to make peace with one another. Though Simba and the Outsiders listened to Kiara's appeal, Zira refused and attempted to attack Simba. In doing so, she was intercepted by Kiara and fell to her death into a raging river. With Zira dead, the Outsiders joined Simba's pride.[2]

Assisting the Lion Guard[]

Mzingo, Kion needs our help to ensure peace in the Pride Lands. Would you and the vultures join us?
―Jasiri[src]

Upon learning of the Outsiders' intent to attack the Pride Lands, Janja and Jasiri journeyed to the Tree of Life to inform the Lion Guard. Together, the hyenas and the Lion Guard journeyed to the Outlands, where Jasiri employed the help of Mzingo and his parliament. As the group approached the border of the Pride Lands, Vitani and her self-formed Lion Guard attacked. Before Kion could use the Roar of the Elders on Vitani's Lion Guard, Kiara intervened and explained that the Outsiders had joined Simba's pride. Kion then bade farewell to Jasiri.[27]
