"Mufasa Dies" is a musical piece composed by Hans Zimmer for The Lion King. It is the underscore that plays during Simba's discovery of Mufasa's body and his self-exile from the Pride Lands.

In the official soundtrack, the score is titled "...To Die For (Score)" and is combined with an edited version of "Stampede". The latter portion that scores the hyena chase is worked into "Hyenas" on non-English versions of the soundtrack.

The score was released on the complete film score under the title "Mufasa's Death". However, the album was retracted after one day. On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with "Mufasa's Death" having been remixed and titled "Mufasa Dies".

The music starts at the point where Simba finds Mufasa's dead body and plays to the end of the chase scene with the hyenas.

The score does not appear on the original cast recording. However, the score is used in the stage show itself. The score is used when Scar, after killing Mufasa, urges Simba to run away and orders the hyenas to kill him.

  • A second version of this cue exists. This version omits a lot of the sad theme, instead replacing it with an arrangement of Mufasa's theme played on pan pipes. This version is identified as the "JK Version", while the version used in the film is identified as the "RR Version".
