"King of Pride Rock (Score)" is a musical piece composed by Hans Zimmer for The Lion King. It is the underscore that plays during Simba's confrontation with Scar and his triumphant ascension of Pride Rock.

Overview

"King of Pride Rock (Score)" was released on May 31, 1994, as part of the original motion picture soundtrack. It was one of four scores included in the release, including "This Land (Score)", "...To Die For (Score)", and "Under the Stars (Score)". The complete film score was released shortly afterward, with "King of Pride Rock (Score)" heard in its entirety as a track titled "Simba and Nala Move In/Finale". However, the album was retracted after one day. On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with "King of Pride Rock (Score)" once more heard in its entirety as a track titled "The Rightful King".

The stage musical uses many sections of score from "King of Pride Rock (Score)". However, instead of being one cue, the score is split into two parts, "Finale - Part 1" and "Finale - Part 2". The original cast recording includes a rendition of the latter section of the score, called "Circle of Life (Reprise)". The complete album was released on November 13, 1997.

Simba's triumphant ascension up Pride Rock, a scene that comprises a section of "King of Pride Rock (Score)"

The first notes of "King of Pride Rock (Score)" can be heard after Scar calls Sarabi to Pride Rock. The track plays through their heated confrontation on the peak and carries into Simba's revelation to the pride that he is still alive. Parts of Scar's verbal confrontation with Simba can be heard before the track skips to the start of the rainstorm that signifies the end of the final battle. At this point, the track documents Simba's triumphant ascension up Pride Rock and ends on the final reprise of "Circle of Life" heard at the conclusion of the film.

Many sections of score were cut from "King of Pride Rock (Score)". Most notable is the final fight between the hyenas and the lionesses. All battle music – including Rafiki's entrance, Timon and Pumbaa's scene, and Simba's final fight with Scar – is cut.
