We're more similar than you think, Kion. Sisi ni sawa!
―Jasiri[src]

Jasiri is a female hyena. She is the queen of the Outlands and the leader of a clan of hyenas in the Outlands.

Jasiri first encountered Kion when the cub lost his way in her territory. Though he distrusted her and refused her help, she trailed him along his misguided route through the Outlands until he agreed to let her be his guide. While traveling with Kion, Jasiri taught him that not all hyenas are evil, and the two began to form a tentative friendship. After dropping Kion off at the edge of the Pride Lands, Jasiri was attacked by Janja and his clan. Kion returned and helped her fend off the enemy hyenas.

Later, when Scar began building an army to overtake the Pride Lands, Jasiri persuaded her clan to found the Hyena Resistance in opposition and convinced Janja and his clan to reform. After Scar's defeat, Janja and Kion appointed Jasiri to be the queen of the Outlands.

Shortly into her rule, Jasiri journeyed with Janja to the Tree of Life to warn the Lion Guard about an invasion of the Pride Lands by the Outsiders. After informing the Lion Guard of the threat and returning to the Pride Lands with them, Jasiri led her clan in battle against Vitani's self-formed Lion Guard. However, the conflict was resolved by Kion's sister, Kiara, and Vitani's brother, Kovu. Later, Jasiri and her clan attended Kion's coronation and wedding to Rani at the Tree of Life.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Well, if it isn't Jasiri. Thought I told ya to stay off our turf.
―Janja, when Jasiri intrudes on his territory[src]

Jasiri lived in the Outlands. She had a sister, Madoa. At some point in her life, she became the leader of a hyena clan.[1] She clashed frequently with Janja's clan because of their conflicting beliefs on the Circle of Life.[2]

Befriending Kion[]

I never thought a lion would help a hyena.

Kion meets Jasiri in the Outlands.

When Kion got separated from the rest of the Lion Guard, he found himself lost in the Outlands. As he desperately sought Flat Ridge Rock, he was confronted by Jasiri, who teased him for not having noticed her sneak up on him. Kion claimed to have known that she was there the whole time, but Jasiri was unconvinced.

Jasiri caught Kion's attention when she called him out for being the leader of the Lion Guard and pointed out that his shoulder mark was a giveaway. Kion wondered whether she was a part of Janja's clan, but Jasiri coyly denied this, then asked Kion why he was in the Outlands. Though defensive, Kion told her that he was hoping to get back to the Pride Lands, and Jasiri pointed out that he was going the wrong way.

Jasiri teaches Kion that hyenas and lions are not so different.

As Kion wandered aimlessly through the Outlands, he got stuck in a bush. He was freed by Jasiri, who teased him for being so foolish. However, her attitude changed when she realized that Kion was hurt, and she volunteered to help him reach Flat Ridge Rock. As the two were traveling, Jasiri revealed that most hyenas respected the Circle of Life and voiced how similar lions and hyenas really were. She and Kion then began to form a tentative friendship.

Upon arriving in Janja's territory, Jasiri and Kion parted ways. However, when Kion left, Janja and his clan arrived and tried to attack Jasiri. She was able to easily defeat Cheezi and Chungu but was pinned down by Janja. Just in time, Kion returned and saved her by using the Roar of the Elders. The Lion Guard arrived and at first thought that Jasiri was a threat, but Kion convinced them that she was a friend. Jasiri and Kion then parted on good terms, with Jasiri returning to the Outlands, while Kion followed his friends back into the Pride Lands.[2]

Skirmish with the Outsiders[]

I'm glad to have all of you as friends.

Jasiri asks Kion to help her reason with a pride of lions.

While playing Baobab Ball, Kion and his best friend, Bunga, overheard a group of frantic antelope shouting about a hyena in the Pride Lands. Bunga attempted to confront the hyena until Kion recognized her as his old friend, Jasiri, and questioned her as to why she was in the Pride Lands. Jasiri admitted that lions had taken over her clan's watering hole and were refusing to share it. Though confused that lions were in the Outlands, Kion agreed to help her sort out the situation and sent Bunga to inform the rest of the Lion Guard of the situation.

Once in the Outlands, Jasiri admitted that she had been afraid that Kion would not side against lions, but Kion pointed out that the lions likely did not know that Jasiri was good. Eventually, the two reached Jasiri's clan, and Jasiri introduced Kion to her sister, Madoa. Kion greeted Madoa and two hyena cubs, but the young ones shied away from him. Madoa explained that they were afraid because of what they knew about lions, and Jasiri added that their fright was only reinforced by the lions who had stolen their watering hole.

Jasiri is attacked by Nuka.

After setting off to the watering hole with Kion, Jasiri was attacked by an adolescent lion named Nuka, who reprimanded her for returning to the watering hole. Kion fended off Nuka to protect Jasiri, which drew the attention of Nuka's younger brother, Kovu. Seeing his brother, Nuka declared that the fight had turned in his favor, but Jasiri stepped up to Kion's side and retorted that they were even.

Slowly, the four began to circle each other, and Kion learned that Kovu and Nuka's family was not welcome in the Pride Lands. Confused, he asserted that his father would likely welcome them into the kingdom, and Nuka asked who his father was. Jasiri answered that Kion was the son of Simba, the king of Pride Rock, and a shocked Kovu and Nuka wondered if they really could return to the Pride Lands. Kovu pointed out that Kion must first speak with their mother, Zira, and Kion and Jasiri agreed to visit the watering hole.

Jasiri pleads with Kion to use the Roar of the Elders to help her family.

Once there, Nuka announced Kion as Simba's son, and Zira introduced herself and her daughter, Vitani. She questioned Kion as to why he was in the Outlands, and Jasiri explained that she had brought Kion there to sort out the water dispute. When Zira wondered how Jasiri could be friends with royalty, Jasiri pointed out that Kion was more than royalty, for he was also the leader of the Lion Guard.

Kion asked Zira why she and her family lived in the Outlands instead of the Pride Lands, but she deflected the question by asking Kion why he had not used the Roar of the Elders to give his friend the water she needed. When Kion reacted with confusion, Zira explained that she knew all about the Roar of the Elders and that all Kion had to do to help Jasiri was roar at a small cloud. Though confused, Kion did as he was requested, and the cloud swelled into a brief rainstorm.

Zira intimidates Jasiri into leaving the watering hole.

An awestruck Kion asked Zira how she had known what his Roar could do, but Zira commented that she would rather speak of the Roar without Jasiri listening. As Zira walked off to speak to Kion privately, Jasiri commented that she did not trust Zira. Kion agreed with her but pointed out that Zira knew more about the Roar than he did and that there was still a possibility that he could convince her to share the watering hole.

While waiting for Kion and Zira to return, Nuka lost patience and tried to attack Jasiri. When Kovu stepped in the way to mediate, Jasiri commented that whatever game Nuka wanted to play, she could play it better. Antagonized, Nuka moved forward to attack but was called off by Zira. She explained to Jasiri that she and Kion had come to an agreement that the watering hole belonged to lions only, which prompted Jasiri to retort that Kion would never agree to such a thing. Zira simply said that lions must stick together and intimidated Jasiri into leaving the watering hole.

Jasiri expresses her gratitude to the Lion Guard for aiding her family.

On her way back to her clan, Jasiri encountered the Lion Guard and informed them that Kion had joined forces with Zira and her family. A shocked Lion Guard insisted that Kion would never be a part of Zira's family, and Jasiri berated herself for having believed Zira's lies.

Together, the Lion Guard and Jasiri found Kion trapped by the Outsiders and helped him defeat them. After the fight, Jasiri and her clan returned to their watering hole, where Madoa admitted that she was glad Jasiri had Kion for a friend. Just then, the two young hyena cubs ran up to Kion, who asked them if they were still scared of him. The two cubs raced away and hid, which prompted laughter from Jasiri and Madoa. Jasiri then told Kion to take it as a compliment, for he was rather fierce.[3]

Janja's attack[]

It's weird. I know Janja was trying to win back his turf, but this was more than that. He was really out to get me.

Jasiri defends her territory from Janja and his clan.

In the Outlands, Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu, searched for the jackals in an attempt to forge an alliance with them. In the midst of their search, Jasiri appeared and marked the territory as her own, effectively stealing it from Janja due to his failure to remark his territory for the dry season. In a rage, Janja attacked her, only to be defeated and cast out of his own land.

Later, Jasiri played with Tunu and Wema. Janja watched from afar and ordered his clan to attack the trio. The clan launched their attack, and Jasiri desperately attempted to protect the cubs from harm. In the midst of the fight, Janja forced the three into an open steam vent, where lava was steadily rising to the surface. As the clan gathered around, preventing any attempt at escape, Jasiri's sister Madoa resolved to get Kion's help.

Madoa eventually reached the Lion Guard and related to them what had happened to Jasiri. Kion suggested that Thurston accompany them to ward off any remaining tsetse flies, and the zebra agreed to his request. The team engaged in a fight with the hyenas, and Janja and his clan were effectively steered away from the edge of the steam vent. With the hyenas out of the way, Kion ordered Beshte to push a large rock into the lava flow, which allowed Jasiri and the cubs to clamber to safety.

Jasiri joins forces with the Lion Guard in order to fend off Janja's clan.

By then, all of the hyenas had fled sans Janja, who declared that he could still win so long as Jasiri was out of the fight. Just then, Jasiri emerged from the steam vent and challenged Janja to take on both herself and the Lion Guard. Reluctantly, Janja gave up the fight, yelling after Jasiri that matters were not over between them.

With Janja gone, Jasiri thanked the Lion Guard for their help and expressed concern over how overzealous Janja and his clan had been. Kion blamed the dry season for Janja's odd behavior, and the two groups departed, with the Lion Guard leading Thurston back to the Pride Lands, while Jasiri returned the cubs to their clan.[4]

Hyena Resistance[]

Jasiri reunites with her friend, Kion, in the Pride Lands.

In the Pride Lands, Jasiri tackled Kion to the ground after watching a skirmish between the Lion Guard and some Outlanders. She commented on how strange it was that all the Outlanders had been banding together, and Kion explained that they were all fighting under Scar's banner. He offered Jasiri and her clan a place in the Pride Lands for protection, but she insisted that they must protect their turf. She then got an idea.

Jasiri returned to her clan and persuaded them to start a Hyena Resistance against the Army of Scar. Once the clan agreed, Jasiri overheard Janja plotting with his clan to take over Mizimu Grove with Kiburi's and Reirei's groups. She sent Madoa to warn the Lion Guard while she and the rest of the clan intercepted Janja's clan. The plan worked, with the Lion Guard defeating Kiburi and Reirei in Mizimu Grove and Jasiri and her clan blocking Janja's access to the Pride Lands with a rockslide.

Jasiri encourages her clan to join forces against Scar.

The Hyena Resistance repeatedly thwarted all of Scar's plans. After the three failed attacks, Jasiri celebrated the Hyena Resistance's success with Kion on the border of the Outlands and the Pride Lands.

Later, Madoa informed the Lion Guard that Scar was planning their biggest attack yet on Mizimu Grove, unaware that it was a trap. She returned to Jasiri, only for the clan to be set upon by Janja, Kiburi, and Reirei.

Jasiri saves Janja from falling into a lava pit.

Across the Pride Lands, Ono scouted the Outlands and caught sight of Jasiri's clan being attacked. The Lion Guard rushed to their aid and defeated the three groups. In the commotion, Janja was knocked into a lava pit, and Jasiri saved him. Janja was stunned at her willingness to save him, and Jasiri explained that he could join the Hyena Resistance instead of allying with Scar. After a moment of hesitation, Janja refused and told her that they were not the same.

After the battle, Jasiri and Kion solidified their alliance against Scar.[5]

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

Outlanders, I know we can all get along here in the Outlands. Just so long as we respect the Circle of Life.
―Jasiri[src]

Over the next few seasons, Jasiri helped the Lion Guard keep Scar's army from invading the Pride Lands. One day, at Flat Ridge Rock, Kion blasted away Scar's army with the Roar of the Elders while Jasiri and the Lion Guard looked on. Afterward, Simba and Rafiki approached, and Simba declared total war on Scar so as to put an end to his terrorism. Though surprised by the decision, Jasiri told Simba that her clan would aid him in his efforts, and he thanked her for her assistance. As the party left Flat Ridge Rock, Shupavu and Njano resolved to report what had transpired to Scar.

Jasiri implores Kion to listen to Janja.

That night, while sleeping at her clan's watering hole, Jasiri picked up Janja's scent and confronted him. She asked him what he was doing in her territory, and he admitted that he had been thinking about what she had said. He then sang a few verses of "Sisi Ni Sawa", which made Jasiri laugh. She asked him what had changed his mind, and he revealed that his clan and the Lion Guard were stuck in a fire at Pride Rock. Horrified, Jasiri scolded Janja for having wasted her time with singing, then took off for Pride Rock. Though confused, Janja followed her.

By the time Jasiri and Janja arrived at Pride Rock, the Lion Guard and Janja's clan had already escaped the fire. Jasiri asked Kion to hear Janja out, then urged Janja to tell the Pride Landers what he knew. At first, Janja misunderstood her and told the gathered animals about his reformation, but she corrected him and implored him to tell Simba what he knew about Scar. Finally understanding her intent, Janja explained what Scar had told him about Kion's ability to use the Roar of the Elders to defeat Scar once and for all. Simba admitted to Jasiri that he was hesitant to trust Janja, but, with some urging from Kion and Makuu, he gave in and readied an invasion force for the following morning. Jasiri told Kion that the hyenas would help the Pride Landers, and Janja confirmed that all the hyenas would help. He then told his clan that they were finally on the right side, and Jasiri, with a laugh, assured him that they were. As Jasiri walked away, Janja admitted that he could get used to hearing her laugh. Unbeknownst to the Pride Landers, Shupavu had witnessed Janja's reformation and relayed what she had seen to Scar.

Jasiri becomes the queen of the Outlands.

The next morning, Jasiri assembled with the other Pride Landers to invade the Outlands. As the Pride Landers charged into battle, Jasiri vowed to keep the Outlanders off the Lion Guard. In the ensuing fight, she charged at the crocodiles and pounced on Tamka, which cleared the path to the volcano. After she relayed this news to Kion, he led the Lion Guard into the volcano's inner chamber to confront Scar.

Eventually, Kion defeated Scar, and the Pride Landers triumphed over the Army of Scar. After the battle, the Lion Guard emerged from the volcano, and Jasiri expressed concern over Kion's newly acquired scar. However, Kion assured her that he would be fine, then announced to the Pride Landers that Scar had been defeated. The Outlanders asked what would happen to them, and Janja remarked that he could only think of one animal who could keep the peace between the Outlanders and the Pride Landers: Jasiri. Though surprised by the appointment, Jasiri announced that, as long as the Outlanders respected the Circle of Life, the Outlands would be peaceful. Janja added that those who objected would have to answer to Jasiri's new clan, which included himself and his minions. After the speech, Jasiri encouraged Kion to take an injured Ono to the Lair of the Lion Guard for healing while she made sure that the Pride Landers had safe passage back to their kingdom. Kion thanked Jasiri for her help, then left with the Lion Guard.[6]

Zira's return[]

It's Zira. She and her evil lions are back.
―Jasiri[src]
Journey101

Jasiri and Janja inform Kion of Zira's attack on the Pride Lands.

Sometime after the Lion Guard left the Pride Lands for healing, Zira and her pride planned to attack the Pride Lands. Since Jasiri's clan was no match for the lions, she and Janja went to look for the Lion Guard. With Azaad's help, she and Janja reached the Tree of Life and informed the Lion Guard of Zira's attack, which prompted them to return to the Pride Lands. Using Kion's Roar, they were able to take a shorter route to the Pride Lands.[7]

Together with the Lion Guard, Jasiri returned to the Outlands and reunited with her clan. Madoa revealed that shortly after Jasiri and Janja had left, Zira had launched an attack on the Pride Lands. With Mzingo's help, they located Vitani's pride and fought against them until Kion nearly used the Roar to end the battle. However, Kiara and Kovu arrived to stop the fight and revealed that the Outsiders had joined the Pride Landers. Jasiri was shocked when Kovu revealed that Zira had died. With the conflict resolved, Jasiri and the rest of the Outlanders returned home in peace.[8]

Kion's coronation[]

Jasiri attended Kion and Rani's wedding at the Tree of Life. She sat beside Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu.[8]

Physical appearance[]

Jasiri is small and slender, with a compact frame and skinny legs. Her pelt is gray, with dark spots and stripes running along her back and shoulders. Her eyes are blue. A long black and purple mane runs up her back, ending in bangs over her forehead. Her lower legs and feet are a very dark shade of purple.[2]

Personality and traits[]

Jasiri jokes with Kion, displaying her spunky and sarcastic nature.

Unlike most residents of the Outlands, Jasiri is friendly and open to making friends with the Pride Landers. She finds humor in just about everything, and Kion even notes that the world is like a giant game to her.[2] Bold and spunky, she is a loyal friend to the Pride Landers and able to look past differences between species. She is protective of her clan and friends, and often courageously puts herself in danger for their sakes, even if the odds are against her.[3] Unlike Janja and his clan, she is disgusted by selfishness and gluttony, and respects the Circle of Life.[2] She is also shown to be smarter and more cunning than them, as she was able to continually foil Scar's plans and outwit his minions.

A natural leader, Jasiri has charisma that can sway those around her and rally them to her cause. This extends even to her enemy Janja, whom she was willing to forgive. She even saved his life and invited him to join her clan,[5] which ultimately redeemed him.[6] While she has a sharp wit and tends to make fun of her enemies, she is not arrogant. She is willing to deal with the Pride Landers and enjoys playing with the pups of her clan, showing her humility and agreeable nature.[4]
