Hans Zimmer is an Academy Award-winning music composer and producer who composed the underscore of The Lion King and its 2019 remake.

Biography[]

German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood's most innovative musical talents, having first enjoyed success in the world of pop music as a member of The Buggles. The group's single, "Video Killed the Radio Star", became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV.

After scoring The Power of One, Disney studio officials approached Zimmer to compose the score for The Lion King. Zimmer brought in South African composer Lebo M to add African music to his score, and said that he had wanted to go to South Africa to record parts of the soundtrack, but was unable to visit the country as he had a police record there "for doing 'subversive' movies" after his work on The Power of One. Disney studio bosses expressed fears that Zimmer would be killed if he went to South Africa, so the recording of the choirs was organized during a visit by Lebo M.

Zimmer won numerous awards for his work on The Lion King, including an Academy Award for Best Original Score, a Golden Globe, and two Grammys. In 1997, Zimmer's score was adapted into a Broadway musical version of the film which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1998. Zimmer also collaborated with Lebo M, Jay Rifkin, and Mark Mancina on the Rhythm of the Pride Lands CD in 1998.
