Most animals have tails, however small. But there is a good reason why Rock Rabbit hasn't got one!

Why Rock Rabbit Has No Tail is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Long ago, every animal lacked a tail. Their creator, the Earth God, remembered that he had intended to give each beast a tail, so he told the animals that if they gathered beneath the great baobab tree, they would find tails waiting for them there. Upon hearing this news, the animals became excited. Monkey and his friends wanted tails to help them swing from branch to branch, so they resolved to be the first ones to arrive.

On their way to the great baobab tree, they saw Rock Rabbit sunning himself and told him to hasten to the tree for his tail. Rock Rabbit, however, asserted that there was still plenty of time and decided to wait. As the day wore on, more and more animals passed him and encouraged him to get his tail, but he did not budge from his spot.

Eventually, Elephant wandered past and questioned Rock Rabbit as to whether he had gotten his tail or not. Rock Rabbit assured Elephant that the Earth God would have set aside a tail for him, but Elephant warned him to not make such assumptions.

Rock Rabbit continued to enjoy the day and watched as the other animals passed by with their new tails. He asked Warthog for a glimpse of his tail, and Warthog complained that he had arrived too late to get a suitable tail. He then showed Rock Rabbit his measly scrap of a tail. Horrified, Rock Rabbit hastened to the baobab tree, where he found no tails waiting for him. To this day, rock rabbits do not have tails.
