Tears of the Hartebeest is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

A bushbuck's beautiful daughter is shy and unable to make up her mind as to who she should marry. Her father decides to challenge her many suitors to collect food for their family and declares that whoever collects the most scrumptious food will be able to marry her.

The day of the competition, animals from across the veld bring food to the bushbuck family, and Zebra is declared the winner. However, the bushbucks are unsure if Zebra is truly the winner, for they have eaten so much that they cannot remember how everything had tasted from the start. Because of the uncertainty, the father bushbuck decides to hold another competition: a race.

The race begins, and the hartebeest speeds ahead of the others. However, when he comes to claim his prize, he finds that Zebra is embracing the bushbuck's daughter. Embarrassed, the father bushbuck apologizes to the hartebeest, explaining that his daughter has finally made up her mind and that he does not wish to go against her desires. The hartebeest is heartbroken and begins to weep. To this day, tears can be seen in the eyes of the hartebeest.
