The Mystery Zebraffe is a magazine story inspired by The Lion King. It was published in two issues of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series as part of the Hakuna Matata magazine series.

Synopsis[]

Part 1[]

The Mystery Zebraffe begins by introducing Simba, the self-exiled prince of the Pride Lands, and his two friends, Timon and Pumbaa. At the start of the story, Timon is telling tall tales about a mysterious creature called a zebraffe, which is half-giraffe and half-zebra. Pumbaa and Simba scoff at him, not believing the story for a second, but Timon insists that the creature exists. With Timon in the lead, the three friends set off on a journey to find a zebraffe.

The journey begins, and Timon leads his friends to an area of dense jungle. Though initially daunted by the thick foliage, Timon treks into the dark jungle. Along the way, he gets covered in ants and falls into the path of an angry bush pig. In a panic, Timon flees and finds protection behind his much larger friends, who scare the pig away. After the giant creature runs off into the jungle, the three friends find refuge at a water hole, but no sooner have they settled down to drink when a herd of angry elephants shows up, ready to drive them away.

Part 2[]

As the elephants charge forward, ready to chase Simba away from their young, the friends take off into the foliage and resume their hunt for a zebraffe. Along the way, Timon attempts to swing from vine to vine, but he loses his grip and falls to the earth. When he gets back up, he finds himself face-to-face with a zebraffe. The creature introduces himself as Oorak and explains that he is in fact an okapi, not a zebraffe.

Timon begs the okapi to stay, so that Pumbaa and Simba can see him for themselves, but the quiet creature lumbers away when Timon races back to get his friends. Disappointed, the meerkat admits defeat, and the three friends return home.
