The Missing Monkey is a magazine story inspired by The Lion King. It was published in two issues of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series as part of the Hakuna Matata magazine series.

Synopsis[]

Part 1[]

The Missing Monkey begins by introducing Simba, the self-exiled prince of the Pride Lands, and his two friends, Timon and Pumbaa. At the start of the story, Simba is resolving to explore the world with Timon. As the friends set off into the jungle, Pumbaa lingers in his mud hole, happy to stay put, but when he finds himself surrounded on all sides by camouflaged lizards, he dashes off after his friends.

No sooner have the friends reunited when a mischievous monkey plucks Timon off the ground and charges away into the trees. As Pumbaa and Simba scramble to save their friend, the monkey, Mayik, gently lays the meerkat in the arms of his mate, Mayika, who has recently lost her son, Haari.

Pumbaa and Simba try to confront the distressed monkey, but Mayika admits that her own son has gone missing and that without a baby to care for, she has nothing to live for. Simba reassures Mayika that he will help her find her baby, and the five settle down to sleep for the night.

Part 2[]

On their way to rescue Haari, the friends run into a giant snail named Slippy, who informs the group that Haari was last seen in the company of a snake. This news greatly disturbs Mayik and Mayika, who take off in the direction of their son, with Pumbaa, Simba, and Timon hard on their tails.

Meanwhile, Haari has been tricked by a giant python into entering a dank cave. Trapped in the dark, Haari cries out for his parents and desperately searches for an escape. All the while, the python slithers closer, intent on making Haari his next meal.

As Simba pounds after his friends, he falls into a deep hole and finds himself face-to-face with none other than Haari. Lost and afraid, the little monkey wraps his arms around the cub just as Mayika reaches down to save Simba. When she pulls the cub to the surface, she is delighted to find her son safe and sound on his back. Haari explains that some friendly bats had distracted the snake while he'd made his escape, and now he is free to return home. Happily together at last, the family of monkeys returns home.
