How Zebra Got His Stripes is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Baboon claims a river as his territory and forbids the other animals from drinking from or setting foot near it. At first, the animals graze elsewhere and respect Baboon's claims to the river. However, when a drought hits, they call a meeting and decide that something must be done to gain access to Baboon's river. Zebra offers to fight Baboon, but Antelope warns him that Baboon is old and experienced at fighting. Despite this, Zebra asserts that he is the only one who can do it, and the other animals reluctantly agree.

Zebra journeys to the river and confronts Baboon, who is busy building a fire. He challenges Baboon to a fight, and Baboon laughs at his naivety. He then accepts Zebra's request and declares that the loser will be banished to a kopje in the middle of the river. The fight begins, and Baboon manages to knock Zebra into the fire, marring his beautiful white coat with dark stripes. The pain is so great that Zebra kicks Baboon across the river, to the kopje in the middle of the water.

With Baboon defeated, the animals rush to the river to drink. To this day, baboons stay near rocky outcroppings, while zebras roam the plains and drink wherever they please.
