"Father's Footsteps" is a musical piece composed by Hans Zimmer for The Lion King. It is the underscore that plays as Mufasa teaches his son, Simba, about the Great Kings of the Past.

"Father's Footsteps" was released as part of the complete film score, shortly after the release of the original motion picture soundtrack. However, it was retracted after one day. On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with "Father's Footsteps" having been remixed and released under the title "I Was Just Trying to Be Brave".

"Father's Footsteps" can be heard during the scene in which Mufasa scolds Simba for disobeying him and teaches him about the Great Kings of the Past. The track picks up when Simba steps into his father's paw print and ends after Mufasa's story about the stars.

  • The cue can be heard in The Lion King 1½ twice: the first time when Ma explains to Timon that everything the light touches belongs to somebody else, and the second time after Simba and Nala fight and Mufasa's ghost appears in the sky.
