Scar: Where is your hunting party? They're not doing their job.
Sarabi: Scar, there is no food. The herds have moved on.
Scar: No! You're just not looking hard enough.
Sarabi: It's over. There is nothing left.
Sarabi and Scar about the condition of the Pride Lands

The famine is a terrible period during Scar's reign, brought on by the king's own selfish rule.

Following the death of Mufasa, Scar claims the crown. While Pride Rock begins to embrace the green, hazy atmosphere of the Elephant Graveyard, hyenas suddenly burst onto the scene. The lionesses are struck by the fact that Scar has taken on the hyenas as his allies, but the new king explains that the hyenas are here with his permission, because a new era has arrived in the Pride Lands. He then climbs to the edge of Pride Rock, where he roars and formalizes his royal title.

The Famine

Banzai and Shenzi: My bones have moved to where they've never been. They are on the outside looking in...
Scar: Are you blaming me?
Banzai and Shenzi: Oh no, it's the lionesses.
—Scar, Banzai and Shenzi in The Madness of King Scar

Sarabi condemns Scar

Due to Scar's poor reign, the land descends into degradation. Scar, in an effort to quash his brother's superior legacy, stomps out every law Mufasa ever made, even going as far as to make it forbidden to even speak his name. Without Mufasa's careful regulation of hunting, the hyenas scatter across the land, eating to their hearts' content, and sometimes even forcing the lionesses to over-hunt for them out of laziness. In addition, at around the same time, a severe drought hits the land, drying up the water supply and killing off all the plant life in the land. Eventually, these events cause the herds to move on, leaving behind a barren wasteland that can barely sustain the emaciated pride of lionesses.

As the condition of the Pride Lands worsens, the hyenas come before Scar and try to appeal to him to find more food, but the king is too lazy to deal with the problem. He responds similarly when Sarabi accuses him of sentencing the pride to death by keeping them in the famine-struck Pride Lands. Angered by Sarabi's accusation that he is less of a king than Mufasa was, Scar strikes her, only to be roared away by Simba.

In Development

  • Originally, the "Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" scene came directly before the battle of Pride Rock.[1]
  • In early concepts, Scar attempted to seduce a full-grown Nala during the famine, and when she refused his advances, he banished her, leading her to Simba.
