Rafiki: Dalila! What has happened here?
Dalila: We have no water, Rafiki. Everything has dried up.
—Dalila and Rafiki on Grass Walls[src]

Dalila is a female mandrill. She is a member of Jelani's troop.

When Jelani became the new leader of Dalila's troop, he proved to be lazy and uncaring, and let his troop suffer as their home of Grass Walls deteriorated. However, when Rafiki returned to the troop, he led them on a migration to a new home in a lush jungle.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Dalila lived in Grass Walls. Before Jelani rose to power, she lived under the leadership of Khalfani.[1]

Move to the jungle[]

Rafiki: Tell me about Jelani. How long has he been the leader?
Dalila: A long time, ever since Khalfani was killed by a leopard.
Rafiki: Khalfani was a wise leader.
Dalila: Indeed he was.
—Dalila and Rafiki[src]

When Rafiki journeyed to Grass Walls, he found that it was no longer the lush place he remembered. Upon reaching the Great Pond, he found Dalila washing her son Mosi's hands in a meager pool of water. Rafiki asked her what had happened, and she told him that everything had dried up. After finding out from the other mandrills that Jelani was their new leader, he asked Dalila to take him to Jelani. She led Rafiki through the parched landscape, with her baby swinging beneath her.

Along the way, Rafiki asked Dalila questions about Jelani. She told him that Jelani had been the leader of the troop since the death of Khalfani, their old leader. Both mandrills solemnly recalled the wisdom and kindness of Khalfani. After meeting up with Karibu, Rafiki's cousin, Dalila led Rafiki to Jelani, who was resting underneath a tree. While Rafiki confronted the young leader, Dalila stood off to the side with Karibu and Rafiki's friend Simba.

After Rafiki seized hold of the troop, he took them on a journey across the desert in search of a new home. Along the way, Dalila complained that she was weak from lack of food, but Rafiki pushed her to keep going. Shortly afterward, a leopard jumped on Dalila's back and seized Mosi in his jaws. As the leopard carried the baby away, Dalila cried out for him. Simba jumped into action and promptly saved Mosi from the leopard. Eventually, the troop made their home in a lush jungle, and Jelani became a more responsible leader.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Dalila: Can't we take a rest? I'm weak from no food.
Rafiki: We must keep going. We have far to travel today.
—Dalila and Rafiki[src]

Dalila is a loyal friend of Rafiki. Her gentle and motherly nature is evident in how deeply she cares for her son Mosi. She is somewhat feeble, as she asked for a rest during her troop's migration from Grass Walls.[1]
