How Lion was Tricked

Be careful in choosing your friends, lion cubs. Make sure you can trust them in times of danger.

Choosing Friends is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis

Bushbuck and Monkey are great friends. One day, the two spot Lion in the distance, and Monkey resolves to climb a tree in escape. A frightened Bushbuck objects that he can't climb to safety, but Monkey insists that he must escape the predator on his own and scurries up a tree, abandoning Bushbuck.

Thinking fast, Bushbuck plays dead, and the lion sniffs his carcass, uninterested, and wanders off. Once the coast is clear, Monkey jumps down from his tree and questions Bushbuck as to what the lion had told him. Bushbuck tells Monkey that Lion had whispered into his ear that he should choose his friends more wisely, and so he does. Without a second glance, Bushbuck bounds away from Monkey, leaving him and their friendship behind.
